Maybe this was because I was very early in my career when I started freelancing, but never be afraid to tap your network or let folks know what you're looking for. If you don't ask you don't get. Same advice for being paid tbh.
Get a good financial advisor to incorporate you/ set up payroll/ do your taxes. Mine also sent me an invoice template that I use and helped me get set up with a business bank account to help split expenses. If you have friends who freelance ask them for a reco, you can DM me if you want the contact info for my guy
^expect to get fucked by taxes if you don't set it up right on year 1—my first year I think I ended up paying $6k out of pocket
Have lots of money as a buffer. It can sometimes take a while to get paid.
Mt freelance. It’s a great community and tells you all the in and outs of that stuff.
I second Mt Freelance. Great primer on everything you need to know and reassurance for the things you think you know.
Get a hard drive!
Make sure your checking account is stacked with money. Grass is not greener for everybody.
One thing I’m glad I did (that was only made possible by remote working) was I took a few shorter term (2-4 week) freelance gigs on top of my FT. It’s tough but with blocking out cals and good time managment I was able to stack away some cash, then as soon as I booked the third gig I resigned my FT and never looked back. Unless you already have an emergency fund then all you need to do is setup your LLC/S-Corp and start booking gigs.
Thanks, all. In terms of incorporating, what are most people doing, LLC or SCorp? Also do agencies have a preference?
S-Corp, but agency won’t know the difference. Either is a 1099 for them.
Most will let you use a 1099 and you should always try, but some big holding companies require W2 work. It just means you won’t get as many tax breaks.
