For the math part, have every kid take two full length untimed practice tests, and annotate any guessing. I usually have them rate their confidence in their answers too.
Have them spend time analyzing the data for areas of weakness. I make data sheets and give the topics titles.
Then I have them take a timed PT, and analyze that data too (big differences between timed and untimed scores require pacing strategies).
Then offer tutorial sessions of topics identified as big problem areas.
The key to improved ACT and SAT performance (on math) is many many many practice questions.
I've seen kids add an average of 110 points on SAT with this strategy, with a few 800's on math and a personal best two month plan turn a 440 into a 750 last year.
Thank you, we've started the process to know what kind of problems/concepts each student needs to focus on. It was nice to point to your post and practice is the key.
CrackACT.org there are practice tests for all subjects and a few full length practice tests all for free. My advice on Reading is to help them find their strongest passage out of the 4. If they start with their best and save their worst for last, they have a better chance at getting more answers correct. If it’s on paper, the kids can jump around as long as they stay within that section only. I taught an ACT English/Reading mini-prep class.
Every time I go to that website I can't get to actual questions through the ads and asking to download things. I appreciate the strategy of finding the their strongest passage- that is new to me.

Here is something I put together for my science students. I have used this approach also with private tutoring.
I used to recommend staying away from the ACT tutoring courses because they didn’t show results. But lately I have seen some benefit at the individual level. I cannot recommend Chad Cargill and his approach enough. He approaches the test with an engineering background and is exhaustive in his detail. But very few students are willing to really put in the work. My tip sheet is so similar to his book recommendations, it’s almost plagiarism, but I did very well myself, and I have also done workshops and tutoring for a very long time.
Good luck. If nothing else, just teach them to speed read and incentivize reading faster. This is the simplest method to gain a few points because most students don’t finish the test due to slow reading speed, and reading speed can be acquired very quickly.
I’m glad to help. Kudos to you for helping kids. My best to you and I hope the students have great results!
After teaching this class you might consider doing ACT prep tutoring on the side. You can charge a bunch! Here is a site you can promote yourself for free: TutorBloom.com
