Getting really frustrated with my job. Im by far the busiest associate my year level, and there are 2 people in my group who literally have no work at all. I feel like I keep missing targets and the partners are disappointed in me, but it’s hard to motivate when I see others not doing anything. I know I should be grateful bc the partners think I’m better than the others (and job security) but I can’t seem to convince myself to care.

If the partners are not giving you a reason to care then you shouldn’t. It’s just a job, not your family, so you should just collect your check. If the partners don’t address your concerns, you should think about lateraling!

You probably won’t love this advice, but one of the best things you can do (regardless of career path) is avoid comparing yourself to others. Focus on doing the best that you can by your own standards. Otherwise you run the risk of anchoring yourself to sinking (and often irrelevant) ships.

Got it. I thought by not hitting targets you meant you didn’t have enough hours.

In that case, learn to say no, and that you understand so and so is likely available.

Can you delegate some of the less intellectual stuff to the ones with no work? The reason your swamped likely is because you’re good. But it doesn’t take a genius to do the more menial tasks you likely have to do in addition to other stuff. Though I did see a first year at a major big law firm in NY I worked at get sacked for fucking up a privilege log. I wasn’t a general litigator, and I think he just didn’t want to do it though. That form generally never hired morons. With a few exceptions…

I haven’t been to the US before, so I don’t know much. I also intend to work whilst I’m there :).
How does the US visa work ? Where in the US would you recommend to a black woman that’s scared of guns ?
Looking forward to hearing back xx.
Thank you :).

I have a direct report who is smart, passionate about her job and can be really innovative. However she carries this enormous weight of responsibility, for needing to do everything, do it right, make sure it's perfect, not trusting colleagues to help. It creates dread and panic and overwhelming workload and a terrible attitude for her and I am speaking with her this week to start to shift her mindset. Any tips in navigating how to let go of this heavy idea of "responsibility"?

First year associate here. I feel like imposter syndrome has made me into a perfectionist, which subsequently has caused an oddly high level of anxiety. I am constantly second guessing myself and I feel like other attorneys at my firm look at me like I’m a moron. I.e. I will give analysis and never hear back from that partner until the next assignment. Is silence from a partner’s end normal? And, how do I break out of this cycle of insecurity?

Want to get the perspective of younger attorneys. We’re a 4-attorney firm (2 partners, one associate, one OC) looking to add a 5th attorney. I left a mid-sized litigation firm on the East Coast where I was a partner to open my own firm. Decision was driven by quality of life. We are a civil lit firm. We don’t have billing requirements per se. We have expectations, but we’re reasonable - big on flexibility & quality of life. What are young associates looking for when evaluating job opportunities?

Any and all questions are welcome regarding leaving Big Law to go in-house or non-traditional, starting your own venture, avoiding burnout, or really anything you want to ask!

A thread will be dropped in the morning, and close at the end of the workday. Tony will be available and popping in all day to answer your questions.
