I loved the business-like Jordan was with everything. He put his whole mind and body to the game and made amazing things happen.
I honestly don’t get how some people make arguments for the MJ’s teams not having much competition. Had to go through Magic, Bird, Isiah, Shaq, Malone, Stockton. All top 30 all-time players
At least where I was growing up it was a common narrative that Stockton was pretty old and relatively washed up by 1998, and that the team was really only getting held up by Malone by then
They played defense
Defense wasnt great back then really, but you were allowed to hand check which made a big difference in guarding quicker players if you were strong. I remember because as a kid I played during that transition and it forced me to change my defensive style literally overnight.

It’s true defense was the difference. Yes Magic and Isaiah and Magic and Bird were great friends, but they killed each other on the court. They wanted to beat each other for bragging rights. Now the players want to play with each other to make winning easier. That’s the difference

The talent was less concentrated so there were more competitive teams.
The Jordan era begins with dominant Lakers, Pistons, and Celtics teams. The Blazers, Sonics, and Suns all had good teams as well. Then the Kicks and Pacers start to emerge. Then you have the Rockets, Jazz, Sonics, and Magic all has championship contenders.
