I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Americans hate seeing their tax dollars go to people that actually need help.
People are more concerned with what the poor are doing with their money than what the rich are doing.

All of the consultants, ad people here made more than what unemployment is dishing out.

Hi , speaking as someone currently laid off (not from EY), and living in CA (LA): the $600 is frankly way too much if you’re single. I live a generously comfortable life at around ~$3k monthly spend here. Unemployment would give me ~$4200 per month. It’s honestly appalling that I’d be able to put money to savings while on unemployment. I would be more than happy with a ~$300 weekly addition. And tbh I’d be fine with just the state maximum too.
it’s obviously turning people off from actually finding jobs because even if you’re a saint - why would you? This is a sick amount of money to receive while sitting at home watching netflix.
Pro
EY- did you miss in my first comment where I said that the point is isn’t to completely drain our savings. If we manage to have some cash we will be the ones who can afford to put more money back into the economy more quickly which benefits EVERYONE.
also you have no idea what my circumstances were BEFORE I started working that didn’t allow for as much savings. So GTFO
I’d also only recently been promoted to manager before being laid off. Please stop painting with your broad brush assumptions on everyone

As we break new viral records across the US. I Dont mind giving unemployed people extra funds until this is over.
Chief
Nope. Go back to work or enjoy your State’s unemployment benefits.

Another week of unemployment numbers coming back better than estimates! Even with 881k new claims (sad to say the big 4 are contributing to that), a net amount of 1.3m returned to the workforce this week. Over 2m people that have been on unemployment found work this week
Pro
The approach should be based on location and how much they were making before. I had a friend who was making $300 more per week in bumf**k South Carolina than he made at his job. Aka he purposely delayed job searches/didn’t search as hard

It is embarrassing that the birthplace of big tech, space exploration etc, still has State unemployment systems running mostly on ....COBOL. Plugging in anything else than a flat rate number is “too complicated”.
Hand out heaven needs to stop.

Corporations pay 6% towards the federal government. They only pay 5% towards charity and it’s likely only to offset their federal taxes. But they receive 25% of the stimulus package.

Look for mortgage defaults and rent evictions by October if they don’t solve this.

We should legislate a deferment of bank loan payments similar to what they did in the UK. This trickle up economy needs to stop feeding the banks.

UE benefits should be the lesser of UE + $600 or their previous salary.

Or go with the unpopular (on this forum at least) option of reopening business and let people go back to work. That way there will be fewer people relying on the government. Essential workers have survived months of this while interacting with the public.
So many elements of this $600 that needs to be addressed
1. The fact it’s a flat amount everywhere is only a fact of poor IT unemployment systems. We need to begin fixing those ASAP and meter the amount based on geography, dependents, and earnings history.
2. We need to ensure we aren’t pushing people into poverty but also create way stronger incentives to go back to work. In addition to unemployment we need a few large government projects that can employ people (the new deal) that can take some of these people collecting and get them back to work. Projects like - green energy, infrastructure modernization, government IT modernization, public internet, etc.
3. We especially need to focus on getting young single employed healthy people back to work. I agree with others this population is softer than other generations and needs to sacrifice a bit. You can get a job tomorrow if you want in most service industries.
4. The people who are getting the $600 and are in industries that aren’t coming back ever we need to focus on massive retraining in order to bridge them into new life. Giving the $600 indefinitely hoping the world goes back to normal is short sighted. Start retraining workforce now (example airline industry) these jobs aren’t coming back.
Enthusiast
Retraining cost money as well as those who have prior loans from previous education that will be void.
Imo they should take back the extra $600/month from the people who received it in their 2020 taxes. They didn’t need extra unemployment insurance money, the standard amount was fine.

I was in NYC and with standard UI, I would only have about $200 left after rent+utilities to LIVE. Now, imagine that for a parent with a kid or two and you’ll realize how screwed some people are. I was lucky to have savings/an emergency fund, but that’s only because I worked in a high paying job with no debts or dependents

Give the people $600
I think we should just start the Purge.... Now's the best time anyway
My brother is making more on unemployment than he’s ever made in his life. Definitely no perverse incentives here.
My partner is back to work with a 40% pay cut and is only making about $80 more per week than unemployment WITHOUT the $600 stimulus. I would love for it to come back but I don't think people should make more than what they were earning when they were working. At the least they should probably extend it until they figure their shit out.
Couldn’t agree more

Biggest issue is everybody is getting it even people who worked 5 hours per week pre-COVID. You should NEVER make more sitting at home as you did working. I could get behind making up to 80% on unemployment but there needs to be upside to going back to work or many people won’t. So nah, no more $600 per week.
Chief
So they should make more money working than sitting at home?
You shouldn’t make more than 70% of your previous salary
Chief
All great. Except we need this next week not 6 months from now.
Give it back!! People need it. Many people were cut from jobs that no longer exist or will take a long time to come back. It’s not like they can just go and find a comparable paying job in this economy/market! You all act like it’s so easy to just get a job that pays your salary... that’s not the case.
I’ve had to work more than ever since the beginning of the pandemic, so I resent this $600 bs. It should be slashed to $0 and the people who got it should be heavily taxed. I guess I’m heartless. Too bad.
“Their $600” ...basically sums up the slippery slope with this socialist BS. I have a weird feeling a lot of these folks will suddenly find jobs within a month of the handouts drying up
