Given a chance to go back in time and not major in accounting, would you take it? Why or why not?

I love finance (and by that I mean researching potential investments, not investment banking) but I felt like my school’s finance curriculum was only geared to people that wanted to do IB, so I switched to accounting to better understand financial statements. Now I realize any gap in knowledge would have been insignificant to people thinking I want a “career pivot”, so yea I would’ve stayed finance and gone the equity research route instead. Time in B4 has been an unnecessary side step.

like

My SO started out in audit and is now in equity research. A lot of his coworkers did too. It’s actually a pretty common path - just work on your CFA and Series exams.

Yes. I would at least do a minor in accounting or would have gotten an associate degree at best. It's definitely good knowledge to have, and maybe would help me find a good job to work part-time, while attending a school full-time. It would also be a good back-up major in case my primary major doesn't create the career opportunities I want or expect. But I wish I had avoided Public Accounting. It's just very hard to understand how demanding this career is and not everyone is cut out for until you have worked on it. Not one of the best careers to have during a pandemic for your mental health.

Yes would 100% still major in accounting. Love the fact that I could get fired tomorrow and have a new job by Monday.

This and I also enjoy accounting. It keeps me on my toes and pays well (at my level).

like

LOL no. I would’ve done something in tech, for sure.

like

Coding or IT for sure. Or I would push myself to start my own business.

I should be an accountant. Public accountants have a much better earnings potential than 95% of CS majors. The media loves to glorify tech careers but it’s extremely competitive, easily outsourced which drives down wages, and constantly changing. For every software engineer making $350k/yr, there’s 20 CS grads working at Starbucks.

That’s great ASM1! Thanks for the response. How many YOE did you jump out of PA at and how many years have you been out since? Sounds like you’ve been promoted a couple of times already which is awesome and I’m curious what that cycle looks like in industry

like

I’d do it again in a heartbeat. I enjoy the work and there’s really nothing else that pays similarly well for someone with the intelligence level that I have, which I’d say is just about average.

I think I would study nutrition and human performance. I didn’t discover this interest till about 2 years ago and it’s very fascinating to me. But accounting is alright too it pays the bills :)

like

I almost transferred to Nutrition.

I think I would be a nurse

definitely. i’m only 25 and already wish i had followed my heart to pursue teaching instead of following the money in accounting.

like

You are still young, if teaching is your passion, then follow that dream! It’s never too late to go back to school!

I think I would’ve prioritized finding a wealthy husband or wife so I could just stay at home lmao

Why “or”? Why not “and”? Double the money.

like

Yes I would have gone to the IT side, a lot less misery I think…..

like

But will say the job security of having the accounting background as well makes me feel a lot better

Would have majored in engineering

like

Me too. But I’d have to go back farther and not do lazy math in high school.

Would have dropped my accounting major and just stuck with finance to be honest. Tax compliance isn’t great.

Second that

Hell no. Pharmacist.

like

I switched from the pharmacy school route in college to accounting (3ish years ago) because the job market for pharmacists has deteriorated rapidly. So many pharmacy schools have opened up in the last decade which are pumping out graduates left and right into a shrinking job market. Wages are on the way down as a result. I’m relieved to have dodged that bullet. 😦

Hell no, would have done something more data science focused.

like

HELL NAH. I went to an accounting focused school so I would’ve loved to be more general business to explore other fields properly outside of the 1-3 courses. Also would’ve considered data science but I don’t know if I had the work ethic back then to really apply myself in math to do well …
