Leadership and then follow guidance. Unless you're going to work for the client, leaving with a good taste in leaderships mouth is more important than the client feeling good about your departure
I would say take client out for lunch/dinner and tell him then. But always let key project members know before that.
If your an SA let your manager / director communicate to the client
Where to P ?
You could handle it two ways 1) tell your leadership and tell them given your close relationship you would like to tell the client (you don't have to tell them where you are going). 2) tell the client as a heads up given your relationship before they hear from official channels ( a tadbit risky). If you are a key stakeholder for client on consulting side you might not have planned any backfill / mitigation process so depends on how your client handles it. Lastly, you don't have to tell your firm where you going - always, say exploring / considering other options but not certain yet; might take some time off - just update your LinkedIn in a few months
Uncle D, main concern in being able to successfully have time to discuss with the client myself in case I get forced out. But worst case, can still reach out afterwords to maintain contact
Following to see if they let you stick out the next two weeks or escort you out
If you're going to a competitor very likely you get rolled off instantly
Do not tell the client until you have given your team leadership a few days to plan your replacement.
as a follow up, I have 2-3 days next week before being done. Apparently I'm important
^^Sounds like you'll be a perfect fit at D. Good luck OP
