If gluten and dairy affect you personally and you see and feel a difference in cutting it out then its not BS. Many people do not have gluten allergies and can digest dairy without an issue- for those people it would probably be BS.
Dairy and gluten free definitely makes my body feel better… it’s just hard bc they also bring me so much joy 🤷🏻♀️
100% agree!! So I only eat gluten and dairy in moderation. Skip the bowl of ice cream at night but enjoy all the cheese on the charcuterie plate. Skip the bread on your sandwich but enjoy a quality brioche bun on your hamburger on the weekend. Life is way better this way for me!
As others have indicated, each person is different so it may or may not be BS for you. I was curious (and bored, I suppose) and did Whole 30 for a month a couple years back to see if I noticed any effects or intolerances. Short story was I felt no different aside from the fact that I got drunk faster afterward due to abstaining from alcohol for a month. That tells me that my body is just fine with all those foods that I eliminated then slowly added back in. I have friends, however, that discovered bloating or other intolerances after adding in things like dairy or soy.
Someone above said “listen to your body” and I can’t agree more with that simple statement. Your body will tell you what you need or don’t need.
Rising Star
Different foods bloat different people.
The idea that gluten or diary makes you fat is not true - if you have LEGITIMATE allergy or intolerance, it will likely have the opposite effect as when you eat the food, you have such an adverse reaction that you end up eating less due to
With that said, we obviously don’t want to be eating foods we can’t eat or absorb, so if you’re having issues - makes sense to cut.
Context is really key here!
I don’t feel particularly bad consuming dairy in moderation regularly. However I gave up dairy for about 6 months twice when I was breastfeeding. Reincorporating dairy made me feel crummy. What was really interesting though is after working with a dietician, I realized dairy made my joints very achey so just because I wasn’t having digestive issues per se, dairy still wasn’t great for me.
I did an inflammation panel. I was may more reactive to typical gluten alternatives than gluten. I’d encourage you to meet with a dietician.
This is helpful, thank you!
I have been GF for over 10 years. It is not BS for me. In the past 10 years, I have had a few times when I have given up on GF to test it out. Here is what consistently happens to me:
- stomach becomes hard and swollen
- severe constipation
- skin rashes (eczema) break out in specific areas (elbows, eyelids, scalp, ears, chest) - always in the same spots
- depression, cloudy mind, feeling off
The short answer is that I have experimented enough over the past 10 years with my body to know that it reacts very strongly to going back on gluten. I wish it weren’t so. There’s nothing yummier than good bread!
I have only ever been able to drink lactose free milk, even as a baby. I am in my late 40s and grew up in a small town in the Midwest so this was definitely not a fad. I was seriously ill with regular milk. Over my life, I have tried various milk products but they mostly don’t agree with me. Yogurt makes me nauseous. Too much cheese gives me diarrhea.
Listen to your body. If you don’t feel well after eating something, don’t eat it. If you are able to eat things without issues, then go ahead.
Pro
It’s not BS. You might have a food allergy, intolerance, or celiac disease.
Dairy makes my skin break out and my stomach burst (lactose intolerant)
Tomatoes, onions, and peppers are the main cause of my bloat and my others'
Lectins!!
It’s complete BS unless you have an actual food allergy/intolerance. A doctor can diagnose this. There is no medical/science-based reason for someone without an allergy or intolerance to not eat dairy or gluten.
Eliminating food should be done with a purpose. I did an elimination diet (Whole30 is a common one but does not work for everyone) to figure out what affects me and how it does. I eat gluten in moderation and cut it completely when I’m having a GI flare up. I’ve learned my triggers and I listen to what my body needs.
I’m also cautious to completely cut anything I don’t need to as it can cause an intolerance or sensitivity over time
I don’t care if it is “BS” or not. I feel better when I’m not eating dairy or gluten. And that’s all I need to know to make a decision to not eat it. I stopped caring if people think I’m high maintenance, picky, etc when I was like 16 and never looked back.
I’m so tired of people rolling their eyes at individuals who are trying to something positive for their health.
These have significantly helped me. Being consistent is the trick! There’s sooooooo many good alternatives for both these years. Happy to recommend any specific products if you’re stuck on any in particular.
