Going from one to many. I’ve been fortunate to have a great practice with excellent clients. Now we have an opportunity to expand which will require hiring 1-3 associates. Can someone give insight on how to do this and what to consider? Does this have to be painful? It’s new to us.

Try not to sell it as a lifestyle firm for less pay. That’s overused and rarely true.

Been there myself. Wouldn’t do it to others.

When my husband had his own practice, he used to contact the career centers of law schools, and he got some great associates who were alumni, and also great part time law clerks who would work part time while going to law school.

I worked part time at a firm this way, too. Great people. Eventually left for big law. They paid me $20/hr. In my first 20 hrs on the job, I finished a $15k flat fee real property deal, which was reviewed and lightly commented on by the partners for like 2 hours only. They thought that was awesome and let me work on literally whatever I wanted to after that! I learned most of my core lawyering skills there.

Remember that under the Model Rules of Professional Responsibility, you are not allowed to bind their souls to the Firm until ar least their third year.

There are always challenges with expansion but before you get into the specifics and the weeds ask yourselves does expansion equal a greater amount in your pocket? A better lifestyle for you or is it an ego thing in the sense “we have to grow and be bigger”. There are more headaches with more staff. There are larger expenses and that list goes on and on. But if the reason for expansion isn’t to make your life easier or richer then question the expansion itself. Ask yourself first WHAT you want. Then ask yourself WHY do you want it. The HOW is the easy part. Good luck either way.

I’d try asking contemporary contacts around town. They may know some talented associates or students looking for an opportunity like the one you have for them. And their endorsement can help you identify good candidates.

The solo and small firm bowl fishes have discussed this in past posts. It definitely does not have to be painful.

I'd come up with a list of persinality/work characteristics that you're looking for and use that as a template for interview questions. I can't tell you how painful it is when your interviewer has no idea what they're doing and it shows.

I’m torn! Current company is offering a lateral movement within the next 6 - 9 months, promotion within 4 - 6 years, and ~3% annual salary increase. The product manager role I want will only be ‘accessible’ after 4 - 6 years (because of the internal grading policy). If I look out, I can get the product manager role with my current skillset, experience, and seniority. What do you recommend me?

I mean, as a recruiter, I agree. Why would I go out of my way to offer you more than what you think you're worth? I had a candidate who asked for $30K less than the lowest number in our budget. And guess what? We gladly gave it to him and he gladly accepted. It'll suck when he finds out his peers without a degree are making 50k more than him but again, it's not my job to tell candidates what they're worth. What do you guys think?
