Stop water an hour before leaving for the airport and then do a potty break right before, have lots of small treats to give your pup along the way, out a blanket in the carry bag that smells like you (I usually sleep with it in the bed for a few nights so it really gets my scent), and then pre-board. Some airports now have play areas, so def use those
I’ve done it several times - give yourself plenty of extra time at the airport. Ideally you’ll want to check in and then take the dog out just before going through security. you’ll probably need to hold your dog while doing that. I put on a plastic collar that has very little metal - so they can have a collar on when going through security. assuming you have a little dog that’s probably used to be handled so it’s usually not a big deal.
get your dog used to the carrier. first sitting in open. then sitting in closed. use the carrier to go some place fun like the pet store. put a blanket in their that smells like you.
i don’t feed my dog before i travel [as advised by the vet]. carry a few treats - when it’s time close the carrier, throw a treat in the bottom and they will go looking for it.
on the plane - don’t make a big deal [the flight crew will know from the ticket and from the carrier]. i usually tell the person sitting in front of me and maybe the person next to me.
I pet my dog during take off and landing but otherwise leave them alone and encourage them to sleep.
