Going to an in-office recruitment event Friday. My 9 year old really wants to come to work with me. I'm thinking of taking him along and letting him hang out in a side office. Appropriate or not?

It is fine, bring a tablet. I loved going to work with my father. He was a university professor in chemistry so I could do a lot of damage there :)

I love it when people bring their kids into work! As long as you don’t pass him off to an EA to supervise, I think it’s great. Here at Kearney we have the concept of bringing your whole self to work and this fits. Give him an office tour and show him where the different departments sit and explain what they do and why that’s important - your staff will love it and appreciate your appreciation of them

Well behaved? Bring them! I actually am not much for kids.. but I love seeing great parents spending time with them.

I had a time when trying to juggle the kids on an in service day and a babysitter flaked on me that I brought both my girls (9 and 7) to my office unannounced. I gave them the tour, had their iPads on WiFi and showed them the kitchen for snacks. I had a critical kickoff meeting and told the kids to not leave my office. (They did anyways). They ended up talking to people in the office and going through all my desk drawers to find my candy and gum stash. The best part - They drew pictures all over my whiteboards and several months later - I still haven’t erased it. In fact, I want them to come back and draw some new stuff for me.

I don’t like it when people bring their kids to work. I find it too distracting. What’s next? Grandma? Your dog? A BBQ grill? ;)

like

Please bring all of those things. I’d love to pet your dog and get to know your gran over a burger.

Is this in the afternoon or all day. If a few hours or later in day probably fine assuming your kiddo is well behaved in general! Have fun

yes... i've done it before

Thank you all... unfortunately the lead recruiting partner thought it was not such a hot idea. There are also security/risk concerns as I would have had to leave him alone in a side office during interviews.

I'm not sure which of us is more upset that I can't take him! I'll have to make it up to him another time. I too went to work with my dad at a formative age and it made a big impression.

If it was a big recruiting day I can see and office space is usually at a premium ... but any other old Friday I would not hesitate.

I once got asked to leave the office for having my 17-year-old niece with me. It was so ridiculous. I’m sure in a different office somebody would have been much more tolerant, so chalking it up to an overzealous HR person

Seriously?! I can't imagine ... hoping this was a really long time ago, things are so different here now.

I interviewed with a company in Financial Services based in New York. The interview wasn’t structured (they’re a start up with around 100 people). I am to transition out of Consulting and they had me do an “exercise” which was basically fixing issues for them, after completing the guy had no other questions and then proceeded to email me to jump again in the meeting because something broke and he needed to fix it. I felt so offended and felt used, am I crazy?
