Going to be going solo soon and wondering how do you keep track of your time? Any suggestions for docketing timers or apps?

There are all sorts of apps and software that will help you with this. Some are strictly for entering time/creating and sending out bills to clients (i.e. Timeslips, etc), and others are all comprehensive with case management and timekeeping (i.e., Cleo, Centerbase, MyCase, etc.). While the later may seem pricey, especially when you are just starting out solo, if you fit it within your budget, I think it’s a worthwhile investment. Will help you stay on top of your cases, deadlines, documents, time keeping, and billing within the same place. It’s also cloud based so you will have access to your practice from anywhere, and at any time.

I use MyCase. Pretty inexpensive, gets the job done, but nothing fancy

like

I use Ebillity and it's free for one seat. It has timers and a fairly straightforward interface. I use that for invoices and tracking payments as well.

like

I just use quickbooks as I go, but only have a couple of clients, not efficient at scale but ok for 5 or so

like

It’s def worth the investment and necessary. I use Cosmolex and it has document upload etc but it makes sending invoices easy and keeping track of time easy

like

Check out MyCase.

100% recommend smokeball! It tracks your time AUTOMATICALLY! As a litigator it’s so nice not to have to start and stop times and easily move from matter to matter. It’s been a game changer!!

I used something like Everhour, that worked pretty well. Ended up switching to MyCase

I used Bill4Time when I started. It was simple and had everything I needed. I felt the other services had too many bells and whistles and Bill4Time gave me more control. As I got busier I switched to Clio because I wanted the bells and whistles. I recommend Bill4Time if you need something basic and more affordable to get started.

Clio for sure! Been using it since I started my solo career. Definitely worth it!

For those who are more of a general practice (solo/small firm) - how do you know what type of cases you’ll enjoy doing and actually know what needs to be done? Example: from probate, to civil ligation, to real estate/property, to family law, to criminal, etc.; they are similar in some senses but vary tremendously as well. How do you juggle cases that you aren’t too familiar with or that you don’t know much about the area of law? Do you just wing it? Look to mentors for help?
