Going to business school in the fall and looking at non-consulting options to have more of my personal life back. Which 6 figure jobs post-MBA would consist of a stable 40ish hour work week?

Corp strategy is all over the map in terms of work life balance. When I was in corp strategy I worked more than I ever did in consulting. I have friends who only work 55 a week. Marketing pay isn't that great from what I've seen outside a few places. I seem to recall conagra offers being pretty good but that was 5-6 years ago. I received a pretty good offer for a treasury group. The work was interesting, you could get your own commodities book to trade, could join the asset mansgement side on a large pension, but consulting paid better and I had student loans. If I was going to join Corp finance id align to treasury. There will be significant automation in other functions coming. Plus the work looks more fun from the outside. I'm sure other folks have better visibility into it.

0 debt meaning you are going for free, or...? Based on salary sounds like you are experienced A, also seems like once you make AC you could exit ZS and get a job at a client for roughly the pay and balance you’re looking for. Guess I’m still missing why you want the MBA unless you’re trying to transition industries or roles

Recent IconRecent

Zs op, if you want to exit to a quasi junior role, why even spend the $$ to go to bschool? It’s a fun vacation but you’ll be $100k+ in debt and you’re not looking for a high pay job afterwards.

Liberty mutual is the work life / salary dream you’ve been looking for.

@zs5- yeah got a full tuition scholarship (not sponsored if that’s what you’re wondering). And yes I would prefer to transition industries as I’m not too sure pharma is for me. I like the marketing/strategy stuff we do but would like that for another industry

like

Then I get it and it can make sense. I would definitely take the full ride. Keep in mind, you need to do your industry and function research NOW! Once recruiting starts it’s a non-stop whirlwind - you won’t have time to do career exploration once you get to school!

Take the full ride!

Livery mutual competes directly with the consulting firms at my school and basically comes in with the pitch: we pay you the same, you don’t travel, and you work 35 to 40 hours a week. It’s their competitive advantage cause insurance is sooo boring.

Plenty of big pharma jobs offer six figures with good wlb, typical 9-6. I know Genentech’s market planning and strategy group is at around $180k all in and good benefits.

like

@d1- and thats a pretty solid pitch on their part because in consulting you could get staffed on a project just as boring with double hours

like

6 figure but still interesting - biz dev or strategic partnerships/internal vc at a big pharma/biotech. E.g Celgene/Roche/Amgen ventures all doing some interesting early round investments to fuel long term growth with dwindling growth in their commercial products

like

Those are tough roles to nab from bschool (generally don’t have internships), and definitely aren’t 40-hr/wk. You’ll get sucked into the internship rat race as a 1Y and pick from the buffet of companies. Literally every job pays 105k+.

like

@op, this is off topic, but would you be willing to talk about the application process and your scholarship? Via burner?

The higher paying jobs generally require more work, but there are plenty of 6-figure jobs that are cushy

My current role is good - pay-wise, manager & team-wise, etc - but I’m really tired of the daily grind of my current job function. I’ve been here for only 4 months so I’m afraid I’m making a mistake leaving a good opportunity for something so unknown and career pivot and sooo new to me (plus it’s a startup, so less stable than current job). What should I do?
