Going to buy a $3k mountain bike. I have 110k Chase points worth 1.1k. Would you put these towards the purchase or save them? I have the cash to purchase outright

Save points for travel where you can get more bang for your buck.

^ That. Cash is the worst use of Chase points

like

Buy outright. Buy used and get a nicer bike, then service it.

Not really. Couple international trips and those are over.

Yeah, don’t use points. At this time of year you can probably call the shop and get a deal if you pay cash, especially if they have it in stock. Those points can be turned into flights and hotels for bike trips. 🤓

I'm going to elaborate a little on my response. I have a bike problem, and currently in the stable are the following: - 1973 Raleigh Grand Prix (Road) - 2014 Yeti SB95 Carbon Race (MTB) - 2017 Trek Domane SL6 (Road) - 2018 Lauf True Grit (Gravel) Living in Colorado, they get used a lot. The great thing about a bicycle is, they can be made "brand new" over and over again. Heck, even if you destoryed the frame, you could move many components over to a new frame (all of them if the new frame was the same size and model as the old, damaged frame). It's for this reason, OP, why I suggest you consider buying a used bike. Let someone else take the depreciation hit and get a better bike for the same money. Buying a store demo is an especially good way to get a much better bike for the same amount you'd spend otherwise on something new, and store demos typically are fully serviced by the store / shop before they're sold. You're going to have to service the thing anyway at some point, so why not use that $3,000 to get something that's a year or two old but may be lighter and have better components (especially in terms drive train, brakes, fork and shock)? Plus, unless you're already a really good rider, you're probably going to lay it down at least once while riding. I bought my Yeti from a friend after he lent it to me for a ride and I took it (not intentionally) off a cliff with me. It was over $6,000 new in 2014, and I bought for half of that (I gave him the depreciated value of the bike in "excellent" condition plus a little extra out of guilt because he loved that bike, as before I crashed it, it was in damn near mint condition and had been immaculately maintained by my friend). While I felt terrible at the time, it all worked out with no hard feelings, and I'm grateful for the experience because it taught me (especially after the first full overhaul service), that despite the scars I put on the beautiful carbon frame, bikes truly can be restored to "like new" condition regardless of age, so long as they are maintained regulaely and properly. Also, if anyone is interested, I'm selling the Trek road bike as I no longer ride it since acquiring the Lauf True Grit (I prefer dirt and gravel riding over road riding). It's in near mint condition, and only has ~350 miles on it; I bought it from a friend that owns a bike shop and they have committed to honoring the full Trek warranty for whomever buys it from me. $2100 shipped, $1900 if you're local and want to pick it up.

If you buy a bike now you can probably get a decent discount on 2016 models, especially if it’s cold out and it’s been sitting in their store for a while

I bought a Roomba with my amex points. Got the best points deal with Home Depot vs cash. I don’t think I’d get cash with my points over something with a better conversion rate

The difference in points at a cash value versus travel is $150

SM1... That's why you look for good used samples and don't just take the first thing that comes around... Plenty of well-kept used bikes.

Yeah but I have over 150k United Miles, that seems to be plenty enough for travel

What kind of bike?

Santa Cruz 5010 R

What year OP?

2018

I think people often forget on here how points really should be valued. Sure, OP should spend his points on travel if he really wants to maximize the value of the points WHEN used agnostically of the OPs situation, but if he doesn’t intend on traveling personally for awhile and / or has other means to pay for travel, then maybe cash is the most valuable use for OP.

Agree. I have 200k Amex points I cannot figure out how to use. I’d take 2k cash in a heartbeat. I have plenty of airline miles and hotel points I already can’t use.

My neighbor has a Santa Cruz, it's great! Principal 1, I've only ever redeemed Home Depot gift cards with the Amex points. Prob $4-5k over the years. They are on sale now too. 40k for $500 instead of 50k

P1, if you have a Schwab brokerage you should look into Schwab platinum. Cash out @ 1.25

Hello everyone, I am a Deloitte auditor and on a H-1b visa. My long term goal is to eventually go back to my home country. Should I still invest in Deloitte 401-k? I just want to know what the deductions are if and when I decide to go home and take the money. I don’t want to miss out on the match that Deloitte does but assessing if it’s worth it and if I will lose much of my money in taxes. Also I currently invest at home (fixed deposits) and get 6% returns. Thanks for any inputs in advance

Hi all! Would anyone know how safe Park Hill is? I'm specifically looking at MLK Jr. Blvd, about 5~10 blocks east of Colorado Blvd, near the City of Axum Park. I was told to steer away from Five Points, but I couldn't find much about Park Hill online. Ideally, I'd like to commute into downtown via public transit 1-2 times a week, so any insights into Denver buses would also be greatly appreciated!

Hi friends, I’m in a bit of a dilemma, and was hoping for some feedback here. I am a Canadian citizen, and have been living and working in the US since 2017 on an L1A visa. I decided to pursue a GC about a year ago, and my company approved the process. Our immigration attorneys were far from helpful, and my case didn’t get very far. Fast forward a year, our company has been acquired, and my GC case has now been transferred to a new legal team. The process is basically restarting from scratch.

I work in a lean team. When it’s me + NSP + a senior partner on the deal, the senior partner refuses to speak to me directly and my work would go up the chain of command. The NSP + senior partner would discuss the rationale for certain positions in the key docs w/o explaining to me or speak to clients directly w/o me, and I’d be asked to send out the revised draft to the opp counsel. When I get calls from opp counsel on tougher points in the drafts, I’m not really able to answer. Is this normal?

Who’s an account executive? It seems like this is an extremely popular and challenging role in sales. Let’s all discuss what we sell, what company we work for, our OTE and if we like our current employer and if we don’t like them what do you wish would change? Let’s specify if we are mid market, enterprise etc. so we can see how the comp compares. Are the goals they set for commission and bonus realistic? I’m an AE as well my title for some reason is taking forever to update.
