Going to Chicago for work. Would it be okay to expense a winter coat if I’m from a warm climate and don’t have one?

I'm sure you can't. But its also not an unreasonable question. Ask your partner. Or ask not to go

likesmart

I'm sure there are ppl who simply don't own such clothing bc they never go to cold climate. If that was me I'd politely decline and say I donf want to spend hundreds on weather appropriate attire just for 1 work trip. But then I do own such clothing so

like

Yes. You can also expense winter tires, a snowblower, etc.

funnylike

Or can expense a house 🏡. Backyards are not permitted, though

Yes get a mont blanc coat. Im sure no one will audit your expense

likefunny

Lol you’re right. You can clearly tell that I cannot afford these coats

Only if it’s a PwC branded Canada Goose

like

Is it approaching soon? If so, it will probably be upper 40s or low 50s which will be straight up pleasant.

like

Chicago has that wind chill though. So even 40s feels probably like 20 lol

like

Go for it. Although we will likely deduct it from your soon-to-be-received last paycheck.

like

You can’t but if the airlines misplaces your luggage you can buy a coat and have them reimburse you even if they find the luggage later. I bought a $350 J-crew coat when that happened.

likesmart

What should I go with next? You can’t really go with Gucci as they have the right to reject it if it’s too extravagant. I was thinking Allen Edmonds next time or cole haan maybe? Was looking for something mid range

Lol! Thanks for this OP

like

If you were going to be in Chicago for an extended period of time, like from now through Feb, yea I’d recommend buying a winter coat. I think expensing that is pushing it though. Ask your project manager what they think.

likefunny

If I was the partner or billing manager on thst project I would make sure you get a reasonable budget to buy one, so this is not a reason for you to be concerned… Honestly, giving you 200-300 bucks when you will be charging 250 a day in a hotel + food is nothing vs my benefit of knowing you will be fine… I may sound like Tim, but we do really care

Goose szn 🥶🥶🥶

like

Do it do it

funny

If it’s a short trip and it’s soon you probably won’t need a serious winter coat. Not like you’ll be outside the whole time. Just need enough to get you from the cab into the building.

like

Just wear a warm sweater and hoodie over it.

like

Serious? Your choice in where you go for a job is no one else's bill to foot

like

I guess I could read it the way you did also. Either way I don’t see a reimbursement in the cards

No lol

No. When are you going? You don’t need a winter coat if you are going soon

😂, as someone in the upper midwest, have you ever seen southerners visit? What we consider nice fall weather they consider freezing.

like

No. It is not a working condition fringe benefit.

No. The only time I’ve heard of someone getting clothing expensed was when they did an inventory count at a construction/manufacturing company (steel toe boots requirement).

They didn’t even let me do that… 😂

I let one of my staff from Miami expense a coat and gloves when travelling to Chicago. He'd never been north of Orlando in his life.
