Estes Park is nice and just outside of Boulder. No skiing there but excellent hiking trails. Take a look at the Inn on Fall River. They have cabins with hot tubs.
Late October will be ghost town. Too early to ski too late for foliage. Was in aspen last year first week in October and all the leaves fell while we were there. Restaurants starting to close of shoulder season until thanksgiving, and there’s not enough snow to do anything. Can still hike but will be COLD at night especially
Went to RMNP a few years ago 3rd wk of October and was cold (snowed, wasn’t prepared lol) but had a great time! Was less busy, got to feel the area. Stayed near the shining hotel. Enjoyed it a lot. Prepare to be frigid.
If you want to be close to a city (Denver or boulder) - the front range has more to do (Covid has changed that of course but we are doing well vis a vis most states). Golden is basically equidistant (and has some cool things of its own) but planning an entire vacation to a suburb (even a cool one like Golden) isn’t something I’d personally do, but I live here :)
If you are looking for a Mountain escape, I love the Roaring Fork Valley (Aspen) in shoulder season. Less people, crisp weather. The best places will be as ‘cheap’ as they get (‘cheap’ for Aspen anyway)
Estes is a little bit of a blend - close to town but on the edge of the park. Most places in Estes will be closed for the season.
This year - with the Cameron Peak fire burning to the north - parts of the Park are closed (and were already restricted due to Covid) and trail ridge rd has been closed a few times (but I would expect by late October it will be contained and trail ridge would be closed by then anyway)
