All the notes you can. (Use some discretion about confidentiality issues.) Filed/publicly executed copies of everything you drafted. Complete list of matters you worked on, no matter how small your role was. List of people you worked with, both supervising attorneys, peers, and people you supervised. You never know when you’ll need to reference something or reach out to someone. I was a litigator, didn’t do this, lateralled, and then applied to corporate in-house roles and it was such a pain in the A trying to remember all the things I did that were corporate-adjacent. I also had to use old docs as writing samples for other positions.

Electronic is best as it’s easiest to store and modify later. I took old filed docs, changed client and other sensitive names, cleaned them up a bit, sometimes fudged fact patterns, and used those as writing samples.
