Check with your carrier. Ive had Sprint for years, now T-Mobile. They give free slow data when abroad. Good enough for maps but painfully slow loading email and webpages. Most carriers will let you buy an international plan.
You can always buy a sim card but probably not worth the hassle. Just take advantage of any free wifi spots as they come.

I've really benefited from this, except when I needed to Uber it wasted an hour of my time and I wish I had paid for data because then I got stuck in rush hour and lost another hour.
Download maps to your phone, there are certain maps apps with navigation without the need to use the internet. Or just pay T-Mobile like $20 and you’ll have unlimited high speed data for google maps.

ATT is like $10/ day to have your regular plan available out of country. Very worth it, just make sure to call or go online and make sure it’s turned on.
Second this — used it for my 20 day Euro trip.
And they only charge max of 10 days ($100) for the billing cycle — rest 15-20 days are free!
Try Airalo app, you can install a second sim on your iPhone that gives you pretty cheap data plan options. So you can still use your US phone number for texts and calls, and a new SIM for data. I believe you can get 10GB for $20. Used it on my trip a month ago and can’t recommend it enough!
I got a SIM card for $20 on Amazon that was totally worth it. I had like 15 GB of data which was perfect for the trip
