Taking a counter offer before a recession is not a great idea in my opinion. You tell the company you’re not loyal and willing to leave, just means you’re the first to go coke layoffs.
It really depends on the org and how valuable you are. Also depends on your managers personality. Some will take it personally, even though it might have nothing to do with them. I would say if you’re going to go to them with the offer, be ready to leave. If you’re going with the mindset of getting a better counteroffer, you will likely be disappointed.
It can be risky to stay because they will feel like any minute you will leave.
Accepting a counter offer only when all of these are true:
1) You are ALMOST indispensable/ it will take years to train someone to replace you because your job is extremely specific and in a niche area, or in an industry that not many people wants to go in.
2) Your only reason for leaving is the pay. You are happy with everything else and don’t really want to leave.
3) Your boss GENUINELY wants you to stay.

I tried, they countered then rescinded the following day.
Damn, they said JK 😭😂😭
If you are unhappy and things are not changing in your current situation, is it even worth it to stay? And if you do stay, and yet things change for a bit then go back to how it was, you’ll miss out on a better offer. How bad is the situation currently? Can you deal with it or is it becoming a financial burden? Can you still pay your bills? Is the retirement benefit worth it? Will they promote you?
It really depends on your team. I’ve had a lot of turnover on my team 😅 and we always counter any offer. What’s your end goal, a new job or just more money at your current place? I was interviewing internally and got multiple offers which I brought to my mgmt team and they offered me a promotion and this was over a year ago. I’ve had a positive experience but I also know my worth and so does my mgmt team.
I would not take a counter offer.
If salary is your only reason for leaving, a counter offer and staying w/ your current employer might work out. If you're looking to leave for other reasons, money will not solve the issues.
I have been asking for a salary review from my current company since march, first they went thru a round of layoffs and reorgs. Then as I was waiting for an offer to take to them to get counteroffer I was advised they will not be doing any salary reviews until its time for merit increases next April, but we can definitely work on some goals so I definitely get that salary increase. The offer I got is 92% higher than my current salary and I counteroffered with them to get me to a 120% salary raise for the new role. Moral of the story take the money from the new company if its worth it
Usually when someone seeks another job their mind is already made up. If you instigated the process that led to a job offer maybe it’s time to move on?
Really appreciate the insights and stories here, everyone! Thank you for taking the time!
Depends on why you went for the other job in the first place - was it because you want to move on or to negotiate a higher salary/change where you are?
Never accept a counter. Most people who accept a counter offer are gone within a year

Only if you aren’t happy because some other reasons which money can’t solve. If the only reasons you are not happy are money and/or title, it’s a different story.
Personally, I don’t entertain a counter offer. I’d rather be a boomerang if the new job doesn’t work out and I want to come back.
Never Stay: If you show them the offer and they counter it will lead to resentment. Say your goodbyes and move on.
This only depends on one thing and one thing only. How is your relationship to your manager? A company willing to invest in you SHOULD care about your success. If they don’t care about a counter offer, then they never cared about your success. People in the comments saying loyalty is somehow a valueable thing. No. Companies will be the first to fuck people over in the name of profits, so, be the same way.
