A thank you note is more than appropriate. Anything else will look like bribery.

A job

I was given a gift card to my favorite steakhouse. It was a welcome surprise

I got another master’s but I gave them a thank you note + a bottle of wine

OP I had former managers and undergrad professors recommending me to the program I wanted and I gave them nothing but a sincere thank you. I have continued to keep in touch with them because they are people who I appreciate, respect, and care about enough to maintain a friendship. I only bring people gifts when I travel and these are usually food or candy, nothing out of the ordinary or expensive.

I did thank you cards and boxes of chocolate. You can also do something more personal depending on their interests - stationary, wine, etc

A female partner at my old firm wrote one of mine, she’s pretty fashionable so I gave her a card and bought her a mini leather pouch with her monogrammed engraved. Also I gave her assistant chocolates!
