From what I understand, ethics is separate from legal. Legal violations have consequences, ethical violations don’t. What’s the point of ethics if there are no consequences? Sure when it’s convenient to be ethnical, everyone will be. It only matters when it’s not convenient. So should there be ethics set up with consequences like loss of job that applies evenly for everyone in the company including the CEO? Should their be financial consequences set up for smaller violations?

Currently an analyst in private management and thinking of switching to portfolio management for a big tech company (mainly for the life style). I am scared I’ll be missing out of the Advisor path which in theory has unlimited upside and good WLB. But I look at my current advisors and don’t necessarily like I envy them or feel like I am learning anything from them. Honestly feeling lost. Anyone has thoughts/tips/opinions? For those of you that are freelancers - do you run into this issue constantly of people asking for holds without telling you what the project is? I don’t even know how to approach this because if I respond back to ask for details and THEN say ‘it’s a 2nd hold’ it’s pretty obvious I’m not interested enough to give a 1st hold. But I’m also never going to give anyone a 1st without details - don’t producers understand this when reaching out? I really don’t get it.

I know junior associates feel the pain of being micromanaged and told exactly what to do all the time, but honestly, enjoy it while it lasts. It’s a whole new kind of pain when the partner ignores all your emails, never forwards you or copies you to keep you in the loop, never tells you what to do, and still gets mad at you when you are “behind”, or “get it wrong” or ask client/other side for something that partner got 3 weeks ago but never forwarded to you. 😂😭

Can someone explain to me why biglaw firms don’t “review up” and have junior/mid level associates evaluate senior associates? I understand partners have no interest in hearing the minions gripe, but wouldn’t it be valuable to know if your senior associates—seeking to enter your partnership are good managers and not complete a**holes? I’ve had so many projects mismanaged by clueless senior associates lately and it seems like juniors/mid levels bear the brunt of it, but there’s no recourse.

Anyone else who feels that they want to step into the more analytical/executive/operational/financial side of business?

I feel that as a corporate lawyer, you’re mostly doing the necessary details to carry out someone else’s decisions (= EG the boring part of business). The most "strategic" advice you give is perhaps advising on a choice between transaction models.

Would only a law degree and big law transactional experience be sufficient to go into more traditional business roles?
