Good morning to everyone except the partners that send tracked changes on Word redlines.

How would you prefer that you receive a redline? Personally, I don’t mind track changes as long as they start with a clean document (and don’t make changes to an already existing redline which shows another party’s changes). It’s better than a PDF in that it allows you to accept or reject changes easily as you review the redraft.

To be clear, I’m talking about them editing the redline itself, not a clean document. This requires you to then figure out how the changes are supposed to apply to the clean version (often confusing when they edit a redlined portion) and then carry those changes over.

I think a lot of people are misunderstanding OP’s pain. I read it to mean some partner went on a word redline and then did track changes on top of that. I’ve had a few partners who do this and it is the BIGGEST PAIN to try and figure out what they changed versus what was part of the original redline. And then incorporate them into the clean like a word processor when partner could have just made everyone’s lives easier and done it himself if he was going to type in a bunch of changes on a word doc anyway. I’d rather have a hand markup.

Better than the partner who tries to read changes to you over the phone. How is that efficiency? The reason you use an associate is to have someone who bills at a lower rate do the work or because it’s too much work for one human. I do not understand sitting on the phone for an hour and a half reading off your edits… nobody wins there, certainly not the client. If you want to provide dictation, give it to your secretary whose time is not billed to the client…

LOL do we work for the same partner? Mine prints out the (word) document, handwrites his edits (which are almost always illegible), then has office services scan it to him so he can email it to me. And then he calls me to let me know that he emailed me and half the time ends up dictating the changes while I’m on the phone. Efficiency ftw amirite 🥴

Better than handwritten changes on a scanned PDF

Seriously.

Always send your redlines in PDF.

Hate being forced in redlines because you fo not see the formatting, they can be faked and it is a mess if several people are commenting.

How about if I send you hard copy with changes/comments and such in red Magic marker?

like

Hahahah

It doesn’t matter to me - track changes are fine- but yes always send the clean - you can always run your own blackline which you do anyway if you don’t trust the attorney

Nothing like a good, old-fashioned Franken-document that takes more time to fix than draft!

Doesn’t it usually show who made what changes so long as you have show full markup turned on?

like

We used redlining software (ChangePro). The only tracked changes in the document are the partner’s comments edits to the underlying redline.

Accept all, new version for your edits and draw compare between previous versions and your partner‘s? You will need a clean to send on in any case I presume.

like

Ah, I thought you would have had all word versions with the historic changes.

Wait why don’t you want tracked changes? I’m confused

like

Okay sorry but you are way spoiled! Partner I work for does either red pen (illegible) edits or reads his edits over the phone… he’s only 55. Seriously track changes to me is 🙌

I’m confused how you can have a “word redline” that’s not in track changes (and FWIW, we use changepro at my firm too)

It’s funny because I exclusively use the redline without tracked changes. It’s really good at picking up on changes to comments. I mostly use it as a reference against the live document.

I think many of you might benefit from more advance training from your firm trainers on how to use track changes and view track changes effectively.

Fine, I'll go back to printing hard copy, using Red Sharpie, and having you come fetch evidence of your errors from my Secretary. Pick your battles, OP, pick your battles.

Mandating health care for teachers...where will it stop? Once government starts mandating an area of our lives they rarely ever back off...they double down and mandate more...so again...where will it stop? Here is a for instance...if we look at days missed then pregnancy is certainly a huge factor...when will the State start mandating birth control for teachers or write contracts that births be scheduled during summer vacation time so as to not negatively impact the continuity in the classroom
