Got a job last year as VP of HR reporting directly to the president. Less than 6 months later they have me reporting to the VP of Finance/COO. I was mad but decided to work through it. Its getting to be unbearable now, the COO is now treating me like one his AVPs. I feel like he his admin spy on my team and he’s always checking to see if me or my team is in the office. Now he has his people send me emails (he’s copied) on problems (to build a case against me etc). Am I paranoid/overreacting?

As you well know, if he wants you out, he'll get you out no matter what you do.

If his admin is spying, maybe he feels out of the loop on what you/your team is working on? I'd add him in to the team WFH/in office calendar, start updating him more frequently on projects, etc. and finally verbalize that you want to make sure he feels he has enough visibility.

Personally, I'd be freshening my resume, putting feelers out to my network and trusted agency contacts all while trying to get closer to the COO.

Thanks for your input. Very helpful. It’s a real possibility that I’m being difficult too. A piece of information I left out: HR used to report into him as an AVP position. He’s been pretty passive aggressive making sure he’s got control over the function again. I’m not sure there’s anything I can do to make him happy at this point. I just don’t think he thinks HR is a VP level job. He wants control and now he’s got it and when I leave, I guarantee it’s going to be an AVP role. Resume has been dusted off and is out there.

This doesn't sound like how a VP role should be managed lol. You're hired at that level because you have the experience to run your team effectively without constant supervision. I would have a conversation with the COO and President about it and go from there.

Thank you. That’s kind of the problem, the COO and President are close and are the ones that got together to change my reporting. The president doesn’t care about HR and doesn’t view it as strategic which is the opposite of what they told me on the beginning obviously

First why does HR get moved under finance? Are all the other VP’s reporting under other VP’s? I will never report in under a VP Finance or CFO as my experience has been they don’t understand HR and some finance professionals are intimidated and they look at it as a cost center that doesn’t bring in revenue because I don’t believe they have the emotional intelligence to understand what happens in HR and frankly my experience is that they don’t take the time to really understand even if you try to educate them on compliance cost to hire etc.. Now I realize there are exceptions but those are rare.
Get your resume updated and attempt to have a clear conversation with him/her to make sure your goals and paths are aligned.

It sounds like you are just dealing with an entirely different management style. I don't think cc'ing you regarding issues necessarily means he's building a case against you - he might just want your input or want you to be aware of what's going on.

Sounds like a problem company. Try switching departments. Personally, dealing with people like that is difficult because they are set on their way of behaving.

Wow. That sounds terrible. I am so sorry you are experiencing that. I will say your feelings are fully valid. How you feel is how you feel. Period.

Thank you. I really appreciate that.

How about talking to him instead of making assumptions?

So tell him I think he’s acting in passive aggressive ways to marginalize me and that I don’t appreciate being micromanaged by someone who is basically my peer?

What? He's trying to build a case against you? Why is that so?

Hi, new hr manager here. I have a bit of a situation at work lol an attorney has been making insensitive comments to our support staff, is generally distracting and over sociable and I’ve gotten some neg feedback about him. I spoke with him this morning and this afternoon, he went up to his legal assistant with the Amber Heard filter on Snap, started asking her what was wrong, she didn’t like being filmed, was upsetand ended up working from home the rest of the day. I’m not sure how to move fwd…

I work with HR/Recruitment at an aquistion company. Most of our subsidiaries are small accounting firms, and we struggle with turnover/recruitment of certified public accountants. Mergers, tech and change affect the way we work and we’re overloaded with inexperienced graduates. As a result, the stereotypical accountant feels threatened, overworked and underpaid. Could really need some advice on how to deal with this issue.

I work at a Manufacturing company. We currently have our hourly team members clock in and out at a physical clocking machine. We would like to change this since one of our values is trust and it makes our team members feel like we don't trust them. What other ways are companies having hourly team members clock in/out?

Hi All - I received a verbal offer from a big 4 organization about 11 days ago. I keep being told that they are waiting on final approval before they can give me the written offer. I am stating to get anxious, as I want to give my notice to my current employer and have another offer that expires at the end of this week, which I did share with the recruiter. Is this a normal timeline for these firms? Starting to get nervous that we may not get final approval. Thank you!

As an experienced, SHRM certified HRBP , I would just like some feedback on your opinion of the differences in the roles between an HRBP an HR Manager besides the obvious that the manager should have direct reports. I am an HRBP and work in step with 3 HRM’s. They all 3 just got out of cycle raises of between 5-20% 😳 and I received nothing. I am quite aware of our HR code that salary is confidential but I was told about this. Would you be looking for other employment? Or stay?

I have a concern...most likely a moral one. I work in a small tech company. Some Developers have reached out to HR regarding other companies offering them double or more of their current Salary. Our HR has extenden counter offers to these developers and also an "Adendum" to their contract where they are now bound to the company for one year and have to provide 90 days notice. Never the less, the company is añso looking for their replacements. Is this a comun practice?

How many steps are there for the candidate process within your companies? For example, we have RS, then HM, then a virtual onsite of an hour presentation followed by 1:1s with each team member. This often results in a 4 hour step. Last step is a conversation with the CEO. Is this considered normal or a good amount of time in its entirety, to vet a potential colleague?
