Fire all the grannies, keep the milfs, and hirer younger hotter staff and give them equal pay. Problem solved.

They won't bite :) just remember to leave your B4 ego if you have any behind. You will find happy & friendly people. Some grumpy but it's common anywhere. Just be open minded. Also I don't believe that people in industry are mediocre , quite smart cookies are there for various reasons. Flexibility , work life balance , no motivation to change job, just like what they do.

like

I don't think so. They are probably used to it. However, you won't be used to it. In B4 (or top regional), you get used to dealing with intelligent staff who have ~6 years of college and CPA licenses. Your new staff may not have that kind of that level of learning or be highly motivated. I haven't been in your position yet, obviously, but read the book "Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When the Stakes are High'. A CFO that interviewed me recommended it to me.

Ey1 - thanks for the insight. the staff I will inherit have all been there 5+ years. Seems much better than these pompous 1st years out of school... I'm filling deficiencies .. But who knows.

like

I am 55 and report to people much much younger it's not a problem unless there is no respect from me or from them I have a much different outlook than younger workers but I am still smart and get my job done it will be a learning curve for all but treat people with respect explain the changes you want to make ask for their opinion and listen to their response work out a compromise if necessary and you will be fine

like

I'm a 40-50 yo woman...here's what I could suggest. Don't go in like you know everything. We do a lot of different things in B4, and you do know a lot - but you don't know everything. If they've been in their position for a while, they will know more about what they do that's you do. Be open to learning from them. Ask for their help in learning how things are done. Do NOT go in and try to make sweeping changes to make things run more like public accounting. Learn the role first and then see what could be more efficient.

Thank you PWC 1. I'm actually looking forward to an environment where everybody is trying to get promoted lol... Hoping its a little more chill

Isn't*

like

It's less chill in that given the talent pool and salary options for those under you, youre going to be working your ass off to fill deficiency after deficiency

Sounds like you don't have the maturity to handle the role OP.

I came out of school and had to supervise two people on their 40s. They weren't very happy about a 20 something telling them what to do. You need to earn their respect when you first start and everything will work out

like

The situation sounds miserable.

like

No you do not need to be nervous. Observant and respectful. Use your leadership skills and look for your verbal and non verbal communications. You don't have to be the persons best friend but you will want to relate to them in a professional level.

like

Annnd maybe I should read a book on how to proof-read.

Don't be nervous. Take the job.

@pwc2 - what part of this conversation makes you believe I lack maturity here?

Take it. There may be some kinks, but they'll work themselves out

Just don't tell anyone how old you are

I have a student with autism. He is mostly behavioral and at a lower learning level so he has to be in a separate classroom. We try to let him play with the students at recess or join in class parties. He has a sibling that attends school as well. But how do I respond to that as an adult? Especially, if they do hear?
