Well, first thing you need to do is understand your leverage and what you’re willing to do if you don’t get what you want...
SC2 - I don’t think you read my post clearly. They have not promoted me yet, nor have they given me a raise. I know it’s coming because my manager told me it will be coming after I ASKED her. Regardless, yea, C2 gets it. I’m fine if they turn me down this next year, but realistically I’d like to start the conversation of expectations for the future (meaning 2-3 years down the line). At the end of the day, yes I am 100% replaceable, but when it comes to $ and leadership opps - if I don’t advocate for myself then no one else will. I don’t want to set a precedent of X number being okay, because I don’t want to later find out others have asked for more and gotten it. So for that... I posed the question of how to frame the convo to someone who I’d think is a lot more seasonally-experienced than I am (Partner 1, not you - maybe I should have clarified this on my first post). I do not want to have the convo in a demanding way, I’d like it to be two-sided in which they explain to me how they got to the number X when they promote me and if there was the possibility to earn more than X, how I could have done things differently in my work output to achieve that. To me, accepting things and not finding out the reasoning behind the decision seems lackadaisical, and I’m not that.
Best way to get a substantial raise is to go out and get another offer... gives your request more credibility when you have a solid offer backing it up. They’ll know you mean business.
Those folks are so rare. Especially if you need to write code that goes into production.
You get what you get and you don’t get upset (I tell my kid that a lot and it applies to raises too). Companies are not obligated to give you raises or bonuses of any kind, just ask the guys who were around in 2008 who were thankful to just have a job and not get let go when the consulting firms were cutting headcount by the thousands. My raise from Senior to Manager was 4% which was paltry but it was still something so its better than nothing. You should wait for the next review cycle to make the attempt or find another offer elsewhere. If there are spot bonuses try for those during the year to boost income.
