Always negotiate. Just because you don’t think you can do better, doesn’t mean they know that.
I always try to push on base. Usually easiest to push on RSUs or sign on though. Sometimes base is capped by salary bands, which companies take pretty seriously.
Yeah that’s fair, I might go back to them because the offer is just a slight bump (~10%) from where I’m at now but given my YOE, I don’t know if there’s much room to flex up on base and bonus. I think the WLB will be significantly better though
Is squeezing out 5–10K worth the impression of, “We gave this guy/gal a top notch offer and they STILL asked for more?”
I got a similar type of offer and was told explicitly it was top of their range for the position based on my performance (and it was believable). I still negotiated and got 15% more equity. If they want you enough to give you their best offer, they also will do what they can to avoid losing you
This seems like a really good offer. Which company?
Prestige doesn’t pay the bills
Ask for an extra week of vacation?
This is a good offer for your YOE. But it doesn't mean you shouldn't negotiate. For reference I got an offer that blew away my expectations - I still went back pushing for base increase and we settled for an incremental $25k sign-on.
A couple things to consider:
- what level are you entering at? Title and band
- how formalized is pay structure at the company (and at the level you're entering.) What can you expected you go up levels (base ranges, % RSUs, etc
- 👆🏾these are questions you can ask now and they will answer because they're trying to get you to sign. You may struggle to understand when you're in
- your best and often only time to negotiate is when entering externally. Afterwards you're in the machine and whatever x% rise is standard comes through. Step changes are unlikely and highly dependent on boss and he
- what are your expectations of share price growth and volatility? Or is it a flat stock. Factor that into your cash flow scenarios
- are RSUs annual r freshes or one time? What's the vesting period? If, for example, 1/4 a year for 4 years, then your package is $270k. If annual refresh with vesting every 2 years, you'll have a dip in comp for first year. Understand cash flow timings and use as rationale for negotiation
- base is what I always negotiate on as it has a multiplier effect (annual pay rise, bonus, rsu %, etc) - but settle on first sign-on or ultimately upfront equity
Bright health? Is this a startup or established payer…? Which plans would even offer RSUs…and lastly what role and team w (only) 7 yoe commands that kind of amazing offer:)
I’d be doing strategy/biz ops within the healthcare innovation space for an established payer
Agree. I’d take that as is.
Is the $40K RSU annual? I agree with others. Try to get some more in RSU if possible.
What role?
Large companies will cap RSUs or harmonize across oy bands so it may be non negotiable. Try to maximize cash - ie sign on bonus. Tell them you’re taking away from quite a bit (lost bonus, vesting, etc) and try to up that 25 to something more.
These salaries are insane! How does this work? You get 25k when you accept the offer? What are RSUs and how do you redeem them? Is the bonus guaranteed? Y’all rolling in money. Yours - Australian
Sign on bonus typically gets paid 1 or 2 paychecks after joining, I'm not sure if any places give it in the first week. I doubt it.
RSUs are stock options. They're like a contractual IOU for stock and if you are employed on the date they vest, you will get the full vesting amount
Damnnn what level is this? Because Deloitte has not come thru
FAANG will work you harder tho in terms of hours (in exchange for the prestige). This is a solid solid offer. I’m at 11 yoe with a top MBA and only at $185 base. As for negotiating, if you have to directly negotiate with hiring manager, it can be tricky but all depends on how you feel the manager will react. If you’re negotiating with Hr, it doesn’t hurt to try. I’ve heard of one friend who had his offer pulled because he tried to negotiate. That being said, if that happened, you probably don’t want to work for them any way....
Just curious, is $40K RSU per year or best across 4 years? Also mind sharing what title this is for?
If you can get more always ask and justify it. Never leave money on the table. I've done this in my last 2 jobs and got 10k more each time.
Something like:
As mentioned during the call I was hoping to land at roughly xxx total comp. I would love to see if a base increase to xxx is possible with the equivalent RSU increase needed to reach that goal. Based on my research I believe this is reasonable for my experience. The increase in the cost of living as well as that I will be leaving my current company shortly before my bonus is influencing this ask as well.
Rising Star
What type of role ?
Strategy/biz ops
Rsus low
I agree with everyone that you should negotiate but is a very strong offer. I received lower than that at same YOE leaving to tech for a manager title. What’s the title on this role?
I am getting this offer with 15 YOE exp and an MBA. Sounds pretty my damn good for your exp.
