Tax is tax. It won’t be too difficult to pivot at your stage the underlying skill set will be the same. However the longer you stay in SALT the less opportunities you will have to get out of it. Take the leap.
The tax concepts you understand will help, but there’s so much to learn about individual tax. Trusts, estate planning, gifts...you’ll learn a ton. Just know going in that you will have a lot to catch up on.
With two years of experience, you have plenty of soft skills and system knowledge that are transferable. Trust your ability to tackle any learning curve!
It’s not that big of a learning curve if you can read and follow instructions. It’s not like a SALT person doing partnerships and corps jumping to federal where they at a loss because the work is different
Huge learning curve but you should get out of SALT sooner than later if you want out.
Are you me? Lol I am in the exact situation. But I think it’s worth it to get out of SALT.
From partnership salt to individuals it’s a huge jump. But your a staff and they know that it’s different so they will teach you.
It’s annoying, your going to be doing things like the individuals record keeping. It’s not hard just annoying. I will say it’s better than salt work. Salt work is very very tough to leave. Most smaller cpa firms don’t even have a salt team. it’s better you leave now if you don’t like it.
I’m in salt and trying to get out badly.
How did you guys land these positions?? Any advice is greatly appreciated!
I am in my process still. I will have a call with my coach next week. I want to transfer office as well. I looked for office I want to transfer and the SM or M over there. Ping them. I feel like leadership people at Deloitte are mostly nice so that why I pinged them randomly rather than sending email. One of the manager set up a call with me next week to just talk. She also gives to the Business Talent Advisor to contact to initiate to transition. My advice is again, network. I am super introverted but because I want to get out so bad, I made my way out. I am TCII so I have nothing to lose. And I would also be okay if they want me to be staff for another year rather me being in SALT.
How are you getting offers to do individual work with no individual experience?
Also wealth management firms do not have complicated returns to prepare- they’re usually corporate executives or athletes. So you’re dealing with a W2 a few 1099s, maybe a K-1. But nothing that challenging from what we see here. It’s very easy to switch
Feel free to go another route and try salt at a smaller firm. Like mine. I'm hiring. 😁
We cover all types of SALT, not just a specific area. Out clients are smaller, so a lot of times we are their tax department and we are always working with the decision makers. Many are pass through entities so they actually care about salt (since they don't have fed or internal tax).
Op from someone who moved from personal to corporate, there is going to be a learning curve but it won’t take long before you feel really good about what you doing. I assume you do your personal taxes so should have some basics down and you will learn the rest. There is so much repetition so you learn super fast. I use to do 3 to 5 returns a day ( busy season) and 60 to 95 percent of the stuff is same so in a month or so you will have a good understanding of personal tax. Good luck 👍
The way I saw it was that the exit opportunities are very limited. Also, with AI most of the stuff is going to be automated and the actual work will go down to 30 to 50 percent and keep going down. I don’t want to open my own firm and don’t want to stay in PA forever so corporate tax seems a good choice. After working here for few years I can easily move to industry as Manager or Senior tax analyst. International Corp tax would be best option but I had to work with what’s available.
