Run away. If you’re looking for exit opportunities that’s one of the worst industries to be in. Your exits will be low-paying nonprofit/HUD companies

like

Not to mention these companies typically have a 4/30 or 6/30 year-ends. So most likely you’ll be doing some commercial work during busy season then off to affordable housing busy season then after that they’ll put you on schools/EBP busy season in the fall. That’s how CR works and how they’re able to pay $25k for senior referrals- you’re working year end after year end in multiple industries.

like

Wtf is affordable housing audit?? Lol

If you want real estate there’s always real estate focused TAS. Probably more interesting

It’s a niche space. You could exit to more project finance and similar consulting roles.

Maybe also affordable housing focused developers or PE?

like

Dont do it. It’s too niche and you won’t be able to find exit opps.

like

That actually sounds incredibly boring and pigeonholing. Juet go regular audit. I’d also recommend to work on public companies and avoid government clients

like

To Cavour on working the public companies route I would 2nd that. I got out of affordable housing and I was unable to get into the public sector. Fortunately I moved to PwC private.

sorry but its typically a position offered to those seen as not being strong on the technical side... if you think you have strong technical auditing skills I would not go that route. as all the others said, it is easy/boring work where you learn almost nothing and just have a lot of paperwork to do so can be long long hours in busy season....

Disagree. Not for those not strong on the technical side, but more a result of what office OP is being hired into. You know we have entire offices that only focus on AH right? If OP is in MA or SW I wouldn’t be surprised and know exactly which office.

Answering as a corporate auditor for a publicly traded company. Our team is split into several subgroups such as financial, IT, and corporate (to name a few). I think a corporate / operational auditor is THE role that has the best exit opportunities from the audit world.

I perform audit and advisory engagements over processes for corporate and also the acquisitions. I touch on everything. Acquisition integration, including switchover of systems. Sustainability. Financials. Operations. Health & Safety. Legal / Compliance. IT / access. Security. Anything falling under Ethics and the Code, including fraud investigations and the hotline.

It's the best! Never bored. Also can go pretty much anywhere if I decide to leave.

In summary, as others have said, a general audit role.

Has anyone who's worked in HR, Finance, or another role with visibility to compensation information been able to use that as leverage for salary negotiations?

To put it bluntly, I know certain people with less experience and a lower performance rating are getting paid more than me due to my role working with payroll data. I suspect this was due to the fact that I did not counter offer when I accepted this role, which was a few months ago, and now I regret it.

One of my frustrations with myself (writing it out here so I can work on it) is that I will print out something that I need, such as a traffic collision report. I will read it without actually reading it. This results in spending time without actually retaining info. Does this happen to anyone else? I’ve found that I can actually focus when I truly force myself, but often this happens after I’ve discovered an error or an important piece of information that I should have noticed earlier.
