I would just find a senior accountant position in industry instead.
Yeah that seems to be the consensus. That or go for a smaller public accounting role. Fund accounting does seem to be too niche.
I did a bit of fund accounting for PE funds. My advice is to avoid administrators at all costs, and not to go into it if you don’t want to pigeonholed. It is challenging work and can be lucrative, but your exit opportunities could be limited to other fund accounting roles.
Fund Administrator work is the less desirable position when it comes to fund accounting. I previously worked at SEI who runs a fairly large fund admin practice. The pay is typically lower, the work a little tedious, and from my experience it was a revolving door fraught with turnover. I personally left because if I stayed long enough my exit ops would be actual PE firms and I desired a more traditional Corp accounting role. The work itself mainly consists of running reports and booking entries for deals, preparing PCAPs, and managing LOC, among other things. If you are determined, try to get a job at an actual firm.
Sooo I was in private equity fund administration right out of college. Fairly large fund administrator- the hours were rough but exit opportunities were solid. Lots of people from that group got on at an actual PE firm.
Super niche
I went back to grad school and received a MS in taxation
While in grad school I moved internally out of fund admin to the tax department
Won’t lie like the only PA jobs I can get are within the investment industry. I’m def burned out and going back to doing talk at a bank 🏦
I guess to avoid being “stuck” keep at it with degrees, credentials ect outside of work. Work for a big enough company you have the option to move internally or at least network internally
