Honestly I think the stigma around this question is unfair. OP got no idea what your situation is, but at some point it must be pretty obvious that someone is pregnant. And again I don’t mean to say anything about you because I know nothing about you or what your physical shape is, but is it possible it was just an honest mistake? Maybe the person thought it was pretty much a sure thing based on some indications, and thought it was okay to ask the question.
A couple of people earlier reacted strongly that I would think that the gender of the person who asked question probably mattered. This thread shows that gender does matter.
It’s worth sharing with your client that it’s never appropriate to ask that question, regardless of the relationship. This may save them from doing it again in the future to someone who may be emotionally devastated by the question (a woman who has recently suffered a miscarriage, a woman bravely battling infertility with medications that may cause weight gain, etc.).
Or the client was arrogant and didn’t care if the question was offensive or completely inappropriate.
For reference....
If question was asked to a dude... gym.
Yikes
Plot twist: OP is a guy and the client still asked him that
What a horribly rude question. I've learned that it's never ok to ask a woman if she's pregnant, no matter how she looks.
D3- yep, that’s how it should go
I can’t believe some of these responses - seriously shame on you for thinking the answer to this is “go work out”.
Sorry, OP. That was rude and unprofessional no matter the level of relationship.
As the saying goes...Miserable witches love company.
“Yes I am and it’s your baby, get prepared to pay child support"
I agree, that’s so rude! I never ask people, because a) It’s none of my business b) there are so many unpleasant health issues that can cause weight gain c) I have a pooch myself. People really lack empathy and professionalism these days. Don’t let it get to you!
I had someone ask me that once (I was pregnant) and to mess with them I said, “It’s the bagels.” They went totally white and I let them stammer for a few seconds before saying, “Bagels and a baby. I’m due in October.”
As a single 22 year old guy I have always been taught it’s extremely inappropriate to ever ask a woman that
Good parenting!
Only correct answer is "not pregnant, just expanding from consuming all the bullshit you throw at me yet trying to keep my real feelings inside to be polite"
Yes. You should feel happy that your client relationship had reached that level. Aaaaand it probably means some extra gym time. Think how much better you’ll feel!
Lol every time I wonder about job security it’s people like this Director who give me hope.
this happened to me as well. I understand why, I have really thin limbs but carry any extra weight in my stomach. I made a joke and told the client it was left over holiday weight. 🤷♀️ I found it amusing although in retrospect probably should have been a bit more taken aback. Don’t worry about it too much OP.
The only people who should be asking that are your doctor, your husband and your lover
I was asked this once after I had a meeting with a client right after lunch. I have a number of GI issues, many of which leave me bloated after eating certain things and this was exactly the case that day. I was so embarrassed and tried to avoid this particular person in the future. I could have gone into all my medical issues at the time but I was just so shocked that this happened because I usually do not have a belly- I just ate something I shouldn’t have that day and I guess she took that as me being pregnant.
Hang in there and don’t let this get to you!
I actually have Celiac Disease so I cannot eat gluten and with that came some lactose intolerance. As I removed gluten from my diet and my body healed, the lactose issue improved (very common in Celiac). However, having been on a gluten free diet for years, the second I accidentally eat any gluten, I blow up like a balloon.
I am a proponent of seeing a GI if you have any issues like this. My primary doc wanted to just diagnose me with IBS, but the GI can do further testing to see exactly what’s going on
Definitely not ok https://www.today.com/parents/pregnancy-etiquette-what-not-say-woman-who-expecting-2D79719877
Wow! Asking a woman if she is pregnant is a honest mistake? Lol the nerve of some people nowadays!!
That’s about as old school/good old boys club as it gets. It is inappropriate to comment on a woman’s body in the workplace, period. ESPECIALLY if you are a man. This isn’t difficult.
Not okay. Not ever okay
