I didn’t mean to laugh but… it is kinda funny
Very true. I started the job with them telling me that there was no real billable requirement. For me, this justified the low pay. It's my first firm job so I was naive and believed them lol. After a few months, the requirement became more and more real. Sorry, but billable requirement AND low pay just doesn't add up for me.
Do you think they’d give you a heads up before looking for your replacement? Of course not. You didn’t have to tell them you were interviewing, even if asked.
Exactly! A presiding Judge I heard during an employment dispute once put it perfectly: the employer is entitled to as much notice as the employee is entitled to, ZERO.
This is how you handle your resignation: “you know, the day before yesterday you asked me if I was interviewing and it took me by surprise. I’m an honest person but I felt cornered so self preservation kicked in and I said ‘no.’ The truth is that I was interviewing and yesterday I got an offer, which I accepted on the spot. I’m very sorry for not being forthcoming but I frankly didn’t think it was fair to put me on the spot like that.”
They were probably tipped off and already knew OP was interviewing before they even asked.

Good luck giving notice once you have cleared conflicts and have a start date at the new firm.
V happy for you!
UPDATE: I told them yesterday. They took it well, or at least they didn't make any comments or issues about it. I gave them 2 weeks notice but they told me today can just be my last day because there wasn't a point in having me continuing to work on cases. I sort of expected that; they've done the same in the past when others have put in their notice.
They will not pay me. I emailed to ask and they said that yesterday will be my last day of pay.
Awkward 🐢.
I heard a story from my buddy who was in a similar situation—except he was late to work because he stuck in the line at chick fil-a. When asked why he had been late he freaked out and said, “tbh I’ve been interviewing at other firms.” They responded with offering higher compensation and a retention bonus.
I couldn’t believe it. WILD!
Lmao. Amazing.
This happened to me recently. I gave my notice today and some of the attorneys were really nice about it. I was surprised that a couple others I worked closely with were very short with me, said they were disappointing in training a new layer who was now leaving and a few other things.. the comments definitely make it easier to say good bye. Anyways , Good luck in your new role!!
A similar thing happened to me once. If your new position is in the same area of law, just be ready to see your old colleagues (read enemies) at the courthouse during a hearing. Lol
Luckily it's a different area and different state.

Hindsight is 20/20 I realize but I wonder what they would have said if you answered their question with “why are you asking if I am interviewing?” You need to do what’s best for you of course. I would be troubled by the bold lie in a profession where reputation is important.
I get not wanting to lie. But if I met an attorney that wouldn’t admit to interviewing I wouldn’t think of them as a dishonest person or think any less of them. That’s a pretty unique situation and I think the context is very important
I had a similar thing happen to me and I thought it was toxic and sleazy. First of all, why would anyone tell their employer they are interviewing?! I can’t even believe that they thought you’d be honest with them lol
Exactly lol.

Learn from me! Always give notice on a Friday. Otherwise it’s gonna be an awkward week. I learned that lesson the hard way when I lateraled this summer. An extra 2-3 days isn’t going to make a meaningful difference as far as finding your replacement
Yes of course I'm giving two weeks!
