Many homeschool students outperform our public school students! I think if it's done well, then yes, it's good for students. But public education is also good. There are so many types of students that we need many types of education, as well.
Personally I think that it depends on the student and their needs. A student who is into travel athletics may do better with homeschooling as they can fit instructional time around their sports.
I think it strongly varies based on the student AND the person doing the schooling.
I have some really driven students who can complete all their work & content practice in 2-3 hours working independently and were bored to death sitting through school for 7 hours. Now they have time for community service projects, 4-H, hobbies & Crafts (which are sold for $), and sports.
I’ve also seen it fail miserably because parents were tired of getting calls from school about a kids behavior and instead tried to do it at home. Home school wasn’t the help these kids needed.
Academically, if they have the right kind of work ethic I think absolutely. But academics isn’t the only part of going to school, and I’d worry about the social and problem-solving experience they’d miss out on.
There are homeschool organizations and co-ops to address this, and homeschooled children are usually allowed to join public school extracurricular activities. I think the success of homeschooling is completely dependent on the motivation and organization of the “teacher” and the student combined- the work ethic of both!
