Got laid off from my first job after graduating college & living home right now with family. Not sure what direction to go. Was doing a structured finance role and not sure if this is something I still want to do. Any suggestions on other positions in Finance/ looking for areas with growth and potential.

I would suggest you take your time to develop an understanding of what you really like to do. Get a part time job while you are investigating your plan. Go back to your school and see if the job placement office can provide insights. What companies are hiring? Talk with your friends on LinkedIn and see if anything in their jobs appeals to you but make sure you can develop some passion for it.

OP - I know it’s hard but remember that this experience will make you tougher. One needs thick skin to survive in the corporate world. Each bad experience is a learning and blessing in disguise. Wishing you the best !

I’m sorry OP that’s not something easy to go through. Take your time. We aren’t in school where you feel the need to constantly be busy. Make a list of things you want out of a job. Take time to relax and know things will get better. Curious I thought Deloitte was done with cuts though

Unfortunately not. Thought they ended in July but know a bunch of ppl laid off this month too

That’s tough. When it happened to me I used the time to clear my head and figure out my direction. Grad school (not MBA) has always been part of my plan so I finally got an opportunity to prioritize it. Regardless of what you choose to do, go easy on yourself. This is a challenging environment to maneuver. Good luck!

I also graduated from college recently and didn't have a job offer right after. Took a couple months to be with family and friends and honestly just breath. I also decided to start studying for the CFA so you could probably look into that as well. Good luck!

Hi guys! Had a call with a recruiter and they asked for my email to send me the link to apply. Haven’t heard since the initial call, thinking I might have failed the screening call. Would that deter you from applying online? For context, recruiter reached out first and the company was not on my radar before. After some research I got interested, but haven’t articulated that clearly enough on my call (didn’t expect I was going to be asked questions and thought I would just hear about openings).

What kind of roles does “business analyst” open you up to? I have 5 YOE, 3 in audit and 2 in analytics/cloud enablement consulting. Found a role for business analyst at FAANG that sounds like it would make good use of my cumulative experience but not sure if these are typically dead end roles or not.

I am interviewing for a new role and often get asked about a few clients/projects that I did not manage or work on in a day to day capacity. As the department head I gave my team a lot of autonomy to lead their projects, and outside of weekly check ins, I only got involved during RFP stage and when issues came up. I knew in broad strokes what they were working on but wasn’t approving deliverables. So when interviewers ask about these sexy projects we did, I am usually very honest ... (cont)

I don’t belong in my job. I didn’t mind it when I joined in January and was interacting but as we’ve been work from home longer, the less motivation I have. I don’t enjoy the work but I’ve gotten unlucky with my teams too, and can’t remember the last time my manager praised me without a critique. Maybe I’m just bad at my job. At this point I just am doing the bare minimum to not get fired. What do I do? Should I look for a job that I actually would enjoy doing or stick it out?

I went back to my old job when I lost my job. This was probably more an emotional decision. My old manager and team welcomed me back with open arms. I’ve only been back for a couple of weeks but I’ve realized that I want to pivot into analytics and my current role has limitations in this area. Am I horrible for wanting to leave even though they asked me that I was planning to stick around for more than a few months. Any advice appreciated!

Can't decide if this thinking is crazy or smart: Staying in consulting for another 1-1.5 years for good maternity healthcare benefits and smoother pathway to ramp off and back on work, with opportunity to extend leave further with limited professional risk (e.g., in corporate a backfill might become your permanent fill). Worried that this A.) could result in staying much longer than planned B.) would still ultimately result in crazy consulting hours and C.) wouldn't go as smoothly as idealized

Since graduating college 4.5 years ago I’ve worked at three marketing agencies averaging a year and two months at each. I took four months off earlier this year after a layoff to study data science. I’m now back in digital marketing on month six of my current job. How long should I stay at my current company? I’ve been told two years minimum which is unfortunate because if I leave in six months I’ll make a lot more money on the market.
