Got laid off from PA, picked up a temp role in fund accounting, hated the work and quit, got a role for 10k higher in internal audit and love it so far. The one thing I've learned from all of this is

I got laid off recently and it just turned out to be a complete blessing in disguise. It's so sad that they do all this based on timing and scheduling constrains plus company politics, not really about how well you do your job. They probably always say it's about your performance and ratings, but everybody knows they match ratings to what they want to do with you. It's almost insulting for them to hope that people will actually believe their BS and feel bad about themselves. It's a total mess and it's wrong.

to remember all of the suckiness you are currently going through at work. It will make it so much better when you actually find a good position where you are set up for success.

Former BIG 4 here --- the bottom line is that you have to be lucky and land on a good client (with some good people on your side). You have to befriend people and chug the kool-aid to survive. Eventually you have to align yourself with managers/partners that will speak up for you (even if you suck at your job). It should not come as a surprise how many people are still in public accounting (mostly at the manager level and above) that are terrible at their job.

like

Big Four is basically Soviet Russia in WWII: if they think you're a coward, they'll kill you.

like

^ exactly. The process is supposed to be you do your job, you get feedback, if feedback is good and you do well, then that equals a good rating. Unfortunately sometimes they decide what they want your rating to be, and then formulate a story to justify it. Your rating should be an output from the inputs I mentioned. But they already decide what they want the output to be and therefore change the inputs.

like

What they're saying is, if they want to fire someone, they'll give them a 2 even if they deserve a 3 or 4.

like

That's really sad. I came into this job super unaware of all the politics that go on at big 4 in general. They lose a lot of good, hardworking people it seems. Is industry just as politically driven as big 4?

like

when they fire you, the PPEDs will get their bonus from you paycheck at year end. That's what they work.

like

^facts. Gotta chug the kool-aid

like

What do you mean they match ratings to what they want to do with you? So if I got a 4 as a staff what does that mean? I'm not being sarcastic or sassy, just asking because I'm new and don't know the system well.

Industry is even more office politics so if you can't play them, you're probably not succeeded. Only people who get away with not playin politics are the people who make the company a shit ton of money.

Butt chug?

I thought they don't fire us in PA, unless you are a foreigner with a work visa.

Cutting costs after busy season is a reason as well

@EY3 There are several butt chuggers in our office --- BDO Miami. Not only do they butt chug, but they also provide a reach around. It is on display at all of the manager/partner meetings.

Currently a L7 at AWS, going for L8. Been offered a VP position at Capgemini. Ignoring the financials, what reasons / factors would you consider important when making a decision. FYI, I am in a Consumer Goods specialist space and think that in the domain I work in, AWS is definitely a tech leader.

I interviewed for 2 similar positions on different teams at the same company. I really like 1 of the hiring managers and would prefer to work with her. I’d like to withdraw from further interviews with the other team. How do I go about doing that? Should I mention I am withdrawing to consider the other team instead? I don’t want to offend the other manager.

Hey guys. So I’ve accepted a position to start at a firm in two months. I just had a recruiter contact me for another opportunity that sounds kinda interesting. Is there any harm in just talking about it? I guess I have this irrational fear the firm I’ve committed to will find out and tell me to F off or something. Also, they’ve held my position for me for a few months due to personal reasons in my later start date. Thoughts?

HR has told me in in their system it shows it as level 10 across hiring procedure. Now they are giving me offer for level 10 which is absolutely not suitable for me.. so I requested HR for re-leveling if possible and he agreed. Now dont have much updates. want to know is it happened ever? I m tired this is never ending..
