Got laid off. Not completely unexpected but still stings. Everything on the table but difficult to decide path forward. Been doing this so long I never considered anything else. How do you prioritize?

Totally agree - I was laid off at 47 and ended up working my network to get into a role and build a skill that was going to be hot for a long time. I made a significant investment in taking a junior role to build that skill, but 7 years later am on a significant upward trajectory, making 2x what I was pre-investment, and found an organization with values like mine and people I respect. Leverage your skills and your network and look at what you want to be doing in 10 years - now is your opportunity to make that happen. In today’s hot economy looking for work is not a bad thing. Good luck

Sorry to hear. Been there. 1) Don’t panic, it’ll be OK, 2) apply for unemployment, 3) get health insurance. Compare COBRA options with self insurance. You may be able to get subsidized through ACA with your new, reduced income, so do your home work. This is a chance to reassess. List what you love/hate about your last job(s) and figure out what would make you happy then go after it. Resist the urge to take the first thing that comes along. If you’ve saved for a rainy day, it’s raining, don’t be afraid to use some savings to invest in your future happiness holding out for something great. Deep breathes. Best of luck.

It must be tough. Cannot say that I have been in the same shoes. But I have thought about it a lot. If you were with them for a significant time , it may mean a decent severance. Make that count. We postpone enough things in life because we are very busy. Here is a moment when you are not busy and have a little money to give those things a thought. Make that money and the time count. It may be spending more time with kids in summer. Or paying more attention to your significant other. Or picking up a new skill. Not to say do not work on your CV and try to get back in a job. But use the additional time to slow down, smell the flowers and reprioritize. Especially this being summer and all

Thanks. It's still fresh so the initial anxiety hasn't subsided for both my wife and I. Will get there I'm sure.

If you still need the income, I would get some resumes out there first. Get your confidence up with some prospects. Then, i would do what you enjoy. Spend time with your loved ones while you can, before you get back to work. Maybe even think of finding a more laid back role depending on what salary you need to earn. Don’t forget you got to where you are for a reason. Regroup and then crush it. Good luck OP.

OP sorry to hear that. Market is good and I’m sure you’ll find new job quickly. As M1 noted use this time to recharge and relook at your priorities in life. In the rat race we are in it’s rarely we get time to reflect and ponder.

likehelpful

That's everyone for the encouragement and advice. Have a plan and will take time to smell the flowers.

Not sure of your situation, but I walked away in Jan of 2017 and hung out my own shingle. My goal is to work from November to April. So far so good. Lots of small consulting firms out there that utilize contractors. My wife works, so I don’t worry about paying health insurance and frankly we could both retire and be fine so that takes some pressure off as well. Work your network, search out small firms that leverage contractors. Even big firms like PWC have pipelines for contract workers. Take a deep breath, relax for a bit, and figure out what you need to enjoy life again.

helpfullike

That’s helpful. I know PwC have exchange for contractors - not sure of effectiveness. What other avenues have you explored and can share for contracting? That will be appreciated as I had been thinking of it for a while, just did not explore options to the extent of being viable. Thanks

I was in your shoes and did what Director 3 said with a twist. I defined my avatar clients and built a marketing strategy and plan to attract those specific clients. My financial advisor made it possible by respecting Deloitte independence requirements. I have set up online courses and written one book coming out shortly and a second book to be released this fall. This gives me a defined income stream from passive revenue while letting me select the client businesses I work with to make their mission a reality .

OP, I have been there. Laid off at 55. I took some time first, which was a good thing (severance gave me that opportunity). Tried traditional job search methods but wasn’t getting anywhere. Then realized my network was the key. Every opportunity since has been through them. I consulted for a year or so as well. The value and experience you have will come through, with the right company. Good luck and know there are places to go and people to see, and don’t be afraid to take chances.

I couldn't agree more. Online reqs are a crapshoot. Nothing beats handing your resume to a real person, especially someone that supports you. Thanks for sharing your experience and hoping things will turn out fine as you said.

Sorry to hear. I agree with Manager 1 - make any time off count to refresh, reset and do things you have maybe put off before. I hope the anxiety subsides so you can take advantage of the time. I have thought many times what I would do if it happened to me.. best of luck and keep us posted
