Got laid off today due to COVID-19. What would be the best course of action now in your opinion? I would like to stay in consulting if possible but I don’t know where to even start. Thanks in advance

Sorry that you had to go through that. Guidehouse is hiring. We've contunued to win work during the COVID-19 pandemic, have new job posts, and we've hired across the staff classes during each of the past government shutdowns when other firms could not use their resources to maintain their staff. While we are a global firm, many positions in my practice are in Washington DC. If interested, DM me.

We do have an office in Atlanta, but not sure what type of positions, but might want to check that out. Good luck!!

What firm and location?

like

Atlanta. It’s a small consulting firm with a local model.

First things first you need to file for unemployment.

like

Since your previous firm is local I imagine you’d like to stay that way. I know Guidehouse and Deloitte have big presences doing federal work for CDC in your city. Reach out to your network/check w ppl here to put in a referral.

Thank you. Will do.

what do you talk about in your 1:1s?

I got lucky and now have leadership that seems to care about my career growth, but I'm 1. a little overwhelmed taking over a new role from someone who went on parental leave earlier than expected and 2. not used to thinking outside my day to day job, happy to keep my head down and just produce good work.

most of what I bring up in these meetings are logistical or prioritization concerns but I feel like my manager is expecting a lot more from me.

How would you rate your ratios for work, play, and rest?

My life's mostly been 85% work/serious stuff (includes academia), 10% rest, and 5% play.

I've only started to learn to rest more this year and learning to accept lower productivity (was part of the hustle culture).

Q: How do I learn the concept of play? Didn't have that in my childhood growing up. All serious, no fun. Has anyone transitioned successfully?

I feel like a boring, old lady 😔😒

I was a month in as Workday HCM Consultant with Accenture. They immediately throw me into the HCM courses to obtain my WD HCM certification. There are three parts HCM Essentials, HCM Applied, and HCM Practical. The passing score is 70 or above. I scored a 62 on the Essentials portion, I passed Applied, and at the end of this week Practical. During class, I received an “immediate connect” Team call and I was fired because of my low score. I'm devastated, and shocked. Yesterday was my birthday.

Is it generally unwise to switch companies within a year? I just relocated back to hometown and started a new job 6 months ago but I want to relocate again to Atlanta when my lease is up in 6 months. I don’t have much problem with my current role except wanting more money and to relocate. Unsure if it’s worth it to move and get more money or if it’ll be a bad look on my part. Any advice welcomed.

My firm has a collections budget (80% of your billable rate x 1850 hours) and an hourly budget that must be met in order to be eligible for a bonus. The firm cares very little about originations and will reward someone for making their collections over someone who brings in new work. I missed my collection budget due to some odd timing with a client, but originated more than all my peers so no bonus for me. I’ve been at this same mid level firm for 9 years and it’s all I know. Is this normal??

This way you guaranteed your dreams/etc. are fulfilled
