Will EY match? Obviously EY is more prestigious and better for exit opportunities. Few things to factor here. Do you want to be a partner? Path at BDO will be easier than at EY. Need more info to really give a complete answer.
If you never worked for big 4, I'd go with E&Y, otherwise BDO. Given pay is equal.
Wait - you just finished your first year of senioring at EY and got a manager offer at BDO? Are you ready for that? Consider that
Take the promo, but leave in good terms just in case it doesn't work out.
@BDO3 I will see u. The combo is lucrative to me.
Which office
I think it depends. BDO doesn't segregate their practice, so you could get stuck on government clients. Probability is high given the market. Is this a long term move or are you hoping to hop to industry in a few years?
At Sr. Assurance1-Thinking long term move.Matching may not happen.
At PwC 1-Three yes exp at B4.
D1 makes a good point. I was assuming you had 4 or 5 years. You could be setting yourself up for failure here. The jump to manager is a lot, considering that you probably lack the technical experience and project management to successfully meet the expectations. I'm former BDO, many jobs are smaller and do not have multiple managers. It's very possible you will be one step down from the partner and in-charge if making all significant decisions in the engagement, including detailed review of the financials. Are you prepared for that? Seems like a huge jump.
What's the pay jump? Interested for own purposes of what bdo would pay a first year manager
EY will provide better exit opportunities, more so at a manager level. Once I made manager at a BIG 4, my move to BDO was simply based on promotion to the next level and salary. As for being partner at a BDO, Grant, RSM, etc. it is just as difficult if not harder than the BIG 4. You are expected to build a book of business, service that book, and sell some more. BIG 4 poses some challenges, but you can take the technical route or client service. Selling is not a significant focus when it comes to the BIG 4. Clients will pay for BIG 4 simply because of the name (easier to get clients).
Even though they did one year as a senior and have a manager offer with BDO, they will still be acting as a glorified senior for the first year and potentially the second. It's how BDO operates in my experience with them. All first year managers acted as glorified seniors. Sure you had the title and pay but it's how it was. You'll get a lot thrown at you and as those already mentioned, are you sure you're ready for it? You're going to be expected to know a lot more technically, project management issues and you'll be managing way more smaller jobs at once than you could be used to. You are obviously a high performer - yay, congrats!! - but they seem to overwork high performers by piling a lot of crap on them with jobs. Congrats on the offer but definitely consider all possibilities that will come with the new opportunity and if the additional stress is worth it, in case you were trying to get more "work+life balance" out of the move. I worked way more at BDO than I've thought about doing at EY.
OP - assuming you are in the commercial market /SEC exp at EY. When heading to BDO as a manager- you are likely going to be in charging the larger/ more complex clients. Do know coming to BDO- the type of clients will be different than EY. The DC market is growing a lot and a lot of opportunities, but don't expect to manage right when you join
Thank you all for the very thoughtful comments. This is awesome app, learnt a lot from you all.
EY
OP what are you gonna do?
@OP tell us the offer?
OP the DC office is a recently merged office so there is culture issues and a lot of things to work out. Keep that in mind.
