Got offer in Toronto as an Account Strategist, Mid Market Sales. Dream company but don't love the role/sales. Goal is to work in Google Maps or Google Earth in any capacity (my favourite Google products), which I guess means a transfer to the US (I'm not a US citizen). How hard will this be to do?

If impossible, what are notable Google exit opps? Also have a passion for public policy/government. If it's a longer convo would love to DM anyone who I can speak with.

if you’re not loving the role/sales aspect I would say don’t take the offer. From what I’ve seen I think a lot of ppl take roles at their ‘dream company’ that they aren’t really interested in and it ends up being a miserable experience even if it’s just a ‘short stint’

I hear you, it's just a good comp and the people on the team seem to like it, they're all sales though. Also, if I say this to my recruiter or even hiring manager, do you think they would rescind the offer? What if they said like "oh no problem, start here because you have good skills for it and we can see where itll take you" - it seems to be Google is one of the best companies for transferring internally, and this team is being built from new because the old team is in Ann Arbor and they're hiring a ton meaning there is a lot of growth opp. Sorry for the ramble just wanna make the right decision!

What would you want to do on the Google Maps or Google Earth team? Something to keep in mind is that Google Ads (aka Sales) is the cash cow for Google, so there’s likely more job security there than on the Maps/Earth team, plus I’d imagine those are harder roles to get since they’re more niche

In general (independent of Google):
- build the skills you need (side project, gig, certs, education - you name it)
- build reputation and a network
- try to get a foot in the door (internally), ideally proving your potential through hard skills you learned (point above)
- excel in your current role. There are skills (especially soft ones) which can be transferred and useful to convince a rotation

Caveat: I’m not a Googler. That’s what I’d try to do.

Alternatively you could try to work for a startup or other company in a role with the desired product (earth/maps) and then try to transition to G.

From my research you can look into internal transfers after 1 year of working at google. That includes internationally!

Sidebar: how long did the process take for you to get hired. I’m interviewing for the same role!

Hi all,

I've been in marketing for 7 years and it's been primarily paid social analytics and design at a local agency. I want to expand into the world of SEO, but I know its a complex new world for those without experience. Can anyone give me some pointers on where to start and how you got started learning about the basics of SEO? I want to set myself up with a solid base of knowledge from which to grow.

State Street

So I recently found out that my current company is underpaying me. And by that I mean that literally any other company is willing to pay me 15-20k more than what I make now. In my current role they've asked me to take on extra responsibilities with no financial compensation (scrum master type stuff) while still doing my engineering stuff. I don't necessarily mind it, but I'm starting to feel like I'm being taken advantage of. Is it reasonable for me to ask for a raise? Or do I go somewhere else?

By what multiple did you improve (or lose) your skills year over year though your career? Wholly subjective, of course.

Format example:
Yr 0-1: x5 (first year learned way way more than from interning or whatever before)
Yr 1-2: x3.2 (still learned a ton, worth >3 of me from year before)
Yr 2-3: x1.2 (learned a little)
Yr 3-4: x0.6 (burnt out, worth like half of year prior)
etc

FTE only, internships don't count

Hi fishes,

I just got an offer from Morgan Stanley. The offer is indeed handsome and provides other benefits as well. The problem is I just relocated to Pune for my wife's work, we have set up our house here and now if I accept offer I again have to relocate to Bangalore because they aren't offering WFH. What should I do? I know Morgan Stanley is a very reputed firm and might make an enormous impact in my technical growth, but is it worth taking the pain of relocation again?? I am confused.

I need some insight on my salary. I've been working at a large insurance brokerage for 14 years now and am a Senior Account Manager. I service a book of around $1.5M and am doing all the data entry side of the job plus client facing service without much, if any assistance. My current annual salary is $78,500. I've recently found out from someone who left the company, who was in an entry level account management position, was making only $20k less than myself. Am I being fairly compensated?
