I would add on that it depends on where you are at in your career journey. Are you already committed to a specialty/niche area or are you a generalist. If you’ve already decided on a niche and it aligns with the boutique it could be a good move. The specialization of the firm counterbalances the breadth of the Big4. The work gets small at the highly specialized level so your small firm is probably more well known in those circles than you think. If you aren’t sure what your niche is then I wouldn’t recommend. You will be limiting your options and network.

I believe brand matters in early phase of the career. Also, the networking that comes with the brand. If you move out of big citi, you would loose both. But everyone has different priorities. So think about yours.

Good feedback all around. I’m concerned about the brand and networking options. I would only be moving a few hours away, family where I am now and where I would be going which is a plus. Just concerned the safety net of taking a new job isn’t as “safe” in this area versus just hopping to another Big 4

Go for it. Should be a good growth opportunity and you should be able to parley that into a nice bump if you end up boomeranging. The one caveat with small boutiques, and I speak from personal experience on this, is that if they lose a main client or something else happens, they typically don't have the bench that B4 has, so you could end up out of a job pretty quickly if that happens. I did a short stint at a ~50 person boutique and got laid off after a few months due to administrative issues with an engagement and a whopping 3 day bench.

This is my fear too. I have two small children and my wife is a teacher. If it blows up, teachers don’t make enough to hold down the fort haha

Disclaimer: ignorant on rollovers…trying to mitigate that here. Currently rolling over my 401k with a previous employer to my current employer, per their requirement. The previous 401k intuition cut me a couple checks (pre-tax and Roth) and now I’m supposed to mail those to the institution running my new/current 401k. Does this mean I had to close all my positions (a loss in most cases 📉) and now have to use that lump sum to purchase new funds, albeit a lower price point (at this moment)?

Hi everyone, I got approved for an L4 position at Google in the Bay Area and wanted to know how much compensation I should be expecting. My decision came back really fast and the recruiter told me it was because interview and referral feedback was very positive. Currently an SDE2 at Amazon (promoted in April) in NJ with just over 2 YOE. My current base is ~150k and TC is ~180k. I read that the median TC for an L4 in CA is ~250k. Should I be expecting more because of my positive feedback? Thanks!
