Got offers @ McKinsey/Accenture Strategy but did not get past the first rounds at Bain/BCG. Did not get a first round at Deloitte/ ATK when 3.2 GPA's did. What does this say of the recruitment process

Based on your responses here I’m gonna guess it was a cultural issue and less of a GPA issue. You seem like a tool.

It's highly influenced by luck and largely designed to avoid false positives (ie people that aren't as good as we thought) vs false negatives (people that were good but we didn't hire)

Yes that one ! Plus very people driven as well (after all it is a people business...)

Yea it's super high variance, one slight blunder on a case and it's a no go. But since there are more qualified candidates than there are positions, the emphasis is on precision rather than recall.

That firms don’t copy each other down the T to hire people. Among many many other influential factors, you can’t say your performance during all interviews was the same. Therefore, because you got an offer from mck does not mean you are equally qualified/fit for others firms.

Different firms use different evaluative criteria. My wife was at D after undergrad, did post MBA at BCG and then lateraled to McKinsey to join me and she told me that the evaluative criteria are actually fairly different at different firms

at what age? I heard it's near impossible to lateral into an em position

Would also add that the other applicants play into it. There are many times we don’t give an offer to a qualified candidate who we would hire just because someone else was just a slightly better fit. Had #1 not been there #2 would have gotten the job. So many factors, try not to stress/overthink it

@BCG5 I guess not, but I basically received an offer from BCG only after someone that had originally been offered had declined their offer. Was I qualified to get an offer? Yes. Were there spots? Not necessarily.

How do you know other people’s GPAs.... you sound nosy lol. Also, we look at a lot more than just GPA when handing interviews. Every now and then we have a very good candidate come in that didn’t have the highest GPA. As you can imagine, grades aren’t the only way to assess intelligence...

That maybe you’re suited for Strat consulting and not an Ops person

I think it’s all connections , 75 percent of roles get filled bc they know someone, been in touch, or referred directly. GPA means nothing without personality and vice versa

I would say Type I errors are much more favorable to Type II errors given how many people we can interview. Volume of tests is high so Type I don’t matter as much. Types II are incredibly costly

Think it says more about what each team at those firms was looking to fill, not the firms culture.

To clarify, resume screen/interview invites are Type I friendly. Decision rounds are not. Types II strain teams. That hurts. I take your point though and my impression (with admittedly asymmetric data) is that McK “fixes” Types II more rapidly than we do.

Why are you still interviewing? Be grateful for the offers you did get and the one you will accept and remove yourself from the rest of the recruiting process to let others have the opportunity. You can only accept one so stop worrying about other firms you wouldn’t accept anyways.

I can see we have the right approach in place

Did you check your ego at the door? I interview for D and that is a big no for me. Also, did you actually listen to the interviewer? I will not pass somebody who does not listen. If they don't listen during an interview, what are they going to do in a client meeting.

3.2 is is not that high

Maybe they wanted to hire someone dumb to balance things out

Since when is a sub- par GPA considered dumb ? Lol maybe they are looking for personality and not nerds like you 😂

Also, for many of us as candidates, the line between interview success and failure falls in the middle of our interview performance range. Need a good day, receptive interviewer, etc. Our process is setup to accept Type II errors but not Type I. Inevitably, great candidates slip through the cracks. Hopefully, very few future Partners though.
