Got promoted effective 7/1 but am leaving the firm with a start date of 7/7. When should I put in my two weeks? Would like vacation balance paid out at higher salary.

No it’s paid out at whatever salary you accrued the pto at

likesmart

No, it’s not. It is also mandated by employment law. That’s why this is such a big deal for companies as the liability of having this potential payout on the books increases each year as salaries rise. It’s paid out at whatever your final base compensation is on your final day of employment.

like

This is tough.... imo I don't think 6 days of "higher vacation salary" is worth the hassle. I say give the two weeks starting next week.

like

For context I have a vacation balance of ~150 hours

helpful

Vacation payouts are dictated by your state laws or your firm's policy.

It all comes down to firm, state laws, and your risk/reward tolerance here. First look into whether the rate is calculated at your level when you submit the two weeks or your level on your last paycheck. If it's the latter, then what I say next is irrelevant. If it's the former, assess your risk tolerance: [Low] - Put in your two weeks next week, cash out at your current level [Med] - Ask to defer your current job offer by a week for personal reasons (run the math on the opportunity cost of that week of new salary vs the vacation level bump first) [High] - Keep your start date the same, put in your two weeks after July 1st, and ensure your workload at PwC is low and that there is no way for either firm to find out If you are benefiting from a substantial salary bump between jobs, your best bet is probably the low option. Otherwise id proceed with the medium option and send a soft inquiry asking if this is an option. If they are a large company this type of request is par for the course with how many new hires they onboard daily, and they are unlikely to care or remember.
