Got rejected for a post-clerkship opportunity at a firm last week, but just received a recruiting email from the firm. My god this whole thing is so stupid. Rant over.

HI 👋 everyone, I could use your help! I’m trying to get a better sense of the size of the addressable market for one software language versus another, and one approach I was thinking of was total aggregate number of job listings for developers with each skill.

Does anyone here know what tools/sites might be able to best approximate that, or another approach to get the same information? Thank you so much for any help you can provide!

Hi! Disclaimer: not an excel genius…

I’m trying to use the lookup function to grab data from a worksheet within the same workbook. I want the column to reference the cost code in one worksheet, find the cost code in the other and display the billed to date associated with it. The problem is that it repeats an amount randomly. There will be multiples then a blank cell in one that I know has a cost associated with it.
Formula=LOOKUP(D3,!Sheet!$D:$D,!Sheet!$H:$H)

My biglaw job is not amazing, but also isn’t terrible. I like some of the people and a partner or two. The work, though, is boring and as my seniority increases I just get more of it. I don’t want to be partner and I’ve been ready to leave for a few years. But, now that I got an offer to go in-house I feel sad and guilty about leaving the only legal job I’ve ever had. Am I being disloyal by leaving? What about the friends/colleagues I’m leaving behind? Are these feelings normal?

Will employer likely see the email?

Partners/anyone on a hiring committee: what are your thoughts on hiring/hiring back associates who left big law to go in-house, but have decided they want to return to law firm life?

After 7 years of working at a firm, I’m itching to try something new. But I worry I’ll hate in-house work (and hate the pay cut, too, let’s be real). And when I’m not totally exhausted, overwhelmed, and stuck in discovery hell, I actually like big law work. Just wondering what my chances of bouncing back might be.

Is it harder to meet billables in certain practice areas? I’m in T&E and in busy times I’ll be working on 15 different clients in a single day. I feel like I lose so much time task-switching and my billable hours also don’t reflect the mental load I carry around thinking about all the moving parts for so many different clients. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Have you found any time entry or organizational tools that have helped you?

An observation after spending time with 3 firms - one of the biggest red flags is when feedback is based on hours billed rather than quality of work. You should be more worried about huge billables and low output. If you get a negative review based on low hours, the firm is probably not particularly interested in your long term career or development.

I’m in L&E and want to develop business but am still in a spot where most people who reach out are old classmates likely looking for free legal advice (e.g., question about their employment agreement). How do you all respond to messages asking to set up a call?

For my latest email like this, my current plan is to respond asking for the parties’ names to run a soft conflicts check, and I was thinking about including my hourly rate to make it clear it’s not free. Any tips?
