This doesn’t make sense, I think you’re a little confused. By definition having hpv would make your pap NOT normal, you can’t have a normal pap but hpv, that doesn’t make sense. 1) colposcopy is usually required if you have high risk hpv strands and sometimes a biopsy is necessary, I’m surprised the doctor gave you an option to say no 2) body usually clears hpv on its own within 6 months to a year, don’t be anxious about it. Your bf’s history or cancer isn’t relevant. He can’t give you cancer. Just follow up every year on this with a Pap smear until you get a legitimate normal test back

helpful

Yeah like thats usually why they’ll tell you wait a year if the pap is normal but HPV is not vs. If you have abnormal pap + HPV then they push for the copolscopy/next steps.

From what I recall from my science days (HPV was not my specialty but I recall a few lectures) HPV infection causes the cells closes to the “inside” of the cervix to look strange. If the infection progresses then those strange cells progress to the surface layers. A Pap smear looks for those strange cells. When you have a negative Pap smear that means no strange looking cells were detected. Sure, there is some small possibility that the brush didn’t scrape down far enough to detect a strange cell BUT multiple negative Pap smears over time means you are among those that has cleared the infection. Remember if the infection was progressing, the likelihood of getting an irregular pap is higher. Keep up with regular check ups but with multiple negative tests I think you are in the clear.

I’m kicking myself too cuz my gyno even offered to do the colposcopy at the 2nd appointment instead of just another HPV test and Pap but said she didnt think it was necessary given my health and age so I listened to her instead of my anxiety. Now I have to find time to go before the end of the month.

We don’t have a history of cancer in my family (but my boyfriend’s side does) so like I’m hoping my chances are low? At least my last two paps have been normal so based on the internet it says I could maybe get away with not doing a colooscopy? Idk I’m just googling now and I just need my gyno to call me like she said she would

So wait to make sure I am following. You had an irregular Pap and then the two follow ups have been normal or just still show the same grade of HPV?

Yeah like pre-cancer or cancer sells show much higher grade of abnormality. So lower the abnormality the better even tho higher can still clear and be just fine!

I had it and got surgery to get the weird cells removed. Really wasn’t too much of a big deal.

Nice okay good to know. Just any mention of cancer is scary

Have finally saved up enough over the past 4 years of working to be ‘OK’ if I lost my job tomorrow and was out of work for 2 years; i.e I should be able to cover expenses, etc easily without dipping into my 401k at all. This has made it exponentially harder for me to put up with BS, since I always know at the back of my mind I could walk away and be OK. Anyone else ever have this feeling?
