If you want lake - lakeview/Lincoln Park. Pro - very stable, Lakeshore path, red line and buses downtown. Negative - older apartments w fewer upgrades, restaurant and bar scene is older - people have gone to the same bars and restaurants since the 1990s. Getting to/from the Kennedy can suck.
Wicker Park/Bucktown/Logan Square - basically a fresher version of Lincoln Park, but not on the lake (you get the 606, instead) and has the blue-line to get you to downtown or O’Hare. Fresher restaurants.l and bars. Lots of new buildings being built.
River North/Loop/South Loop/West Loop/Fulton Market - much closer to the “city” feel than the other neighborhoods. RN - center of tourist area, so lots to do...but tourists. Most of the New Yorkers I know moved there, first. Loop has changed a lot, but still largely empty on weekends and you’ll be leaving to go to bars/restaurants that aren’t steakhouses or on Michigan Avenue. West Loop/Fulton Market is awesome for restaurants and bars and access to the loop/expressway. Rents are high and will increase with McDonald’s, Google, and others moving major operations into those areas.
If you want meaningful suggestions, provide some ideas of what you're looking for (e.g. high rise, nightlife, restaurants).
