Regardless of your approach, do not talk to HR first. They are administrators first and foremost, and they do not have your best interests at heart. Check with your union rep first, and proceed from there.

Sometimes there’s a decline in enrollment and you are the lowest in building seniority, my building lost 3 positions this year. To be clear, no one lost their job, they were transferred to an available position in another building.
You need to check your contract. You may be offered a position in the district, not a specific grade or school. This means they can move you /reassign you as they see fit.
I had that happen to me twice! Districts can assign you to where there is need or see the best fit. With that said, you have to look at the positive thing. Change is never bad. This could be a move that would better suited for your career and longevity. So i chose to rake the positive outlook and see that it is perhaps a change that I need for growth. It has worked out better for me in both occasions. By the way, the school I left behind has been a sinking ship in terms of behaviour and staff hapiness (I left right on time) So there are positive things that could be in waiting for you if and only if you embrace the change.
Sometimes they just think you're a better fit elsewhere. The only way you will know is to ask whoever made that decision.

That’s where you should start, who told your principal that you were moving to another building & what did that person say was the reason? Now follow up with that person.
It’s usually outlined in your contract. This is typical in my district. Unfortunately, teachers have no formal recourse within which to fight the move.
Yes, typically districts have what's called the rights of assignment. They can assign you to a position that you are qualified to teach. Unless it has happened frequently or you have been singled out it is permitted.
I got moved mid summer one year. Enrollment dropped at my school, so I got moved. I love my new school. Admin is amazing.
In districts where I have worked it is not that uncommon.
Intent to return is the district, not the building.
Details to moving you should be in your contract. You would think a professional method would be to alert you first. The higher powers may think reassignment is better than not having a job. I would think your principal would tell you.
Art, music and PE get notice of their assignment two weeks before start of the year. Every few years you get shifted around, with the exception of the two highest performing schools. They have both had their specials teachers for almost 20 years.
Our union handles such issues. If you are new to the district that can happen depending on staffing needs of each site. Read the contract your district has with the union of you have one, it should be in there. For us there has to be specific issues in order for them to do involuntary transfers.
Been there! Unfortunately my collective bargaining agreement allows for someone to be transferred “in the best interest of the district”. It took a few years to see that if was the plan of someone higher than the admin of the district. If you have the ability to seek assistance through your association or from CTA, give it a go. Otherwise, embrace the change and make it a positive. Get to know your new colleagues, offer up your experience to be a part of something on the new campus. I’m winding down my years of teaching but can see that finding something to make the change “work for me” helped to make the move more palatable. I still have bitterness that it happened so many times but I am working to let that go.
In my previous district, my whole class was moved to a different location. I have also had positions changed mid-year. In my current system, no. No one is moved without a sit down discussion, and typically options to go or stay.
I’ve been and it was a matter of seniority and enrollment numbers. I was informed on the 1st day of a new school year that would be moving to another school and teaching a different grade-level. In our district you are hired by the corporation not the individual school meaning you may not stay at that particular school. Any of us can be moved at any time. Maybe it’s the same. Check with your union rep.
I've been moved all over. I think in most regions districts may place you anywhere you're certified to teach. I've heard of admins using this punitively but in my experience it's almost always just due to staffing needs. It doesn't feel great to be treated like a Lego, but it's better than being unemployed!
My experience has always been due to enrollment drop, lowest seniority always goes…just find out the reason and take it from there at the very least you won’t feel as if move is personal. Good luck!
In NJ, once you are tenured, your guarantee is for a job. It doesn't have to be the job you had, only one you are certified to teach.
Not me but it happened to friend. Basically someone with tenure had to be placed so she got moved bc they were non tenure. Not sure of your situation. I would start with HR though.
I had to go back and forth from middle school to high school and back. It was decided for me. Also, since I'm certified in more than one area, the subjects I'm teaching get changed from time to time. (I'm teaching 3 subjects this year.)
My condolences.
