Due to Covid 19 I took job back in Civil sector even though I have a masters degree in WRE. It's been almost 6 months of constant applying and rejection and still I'm nowhere close to a job in my dream branch which is the Water sector.Im hopeful that through this portal I may find an entry level position in water

Have a job that makes you money. Have a hobby that makes you happy. Don’t derail your life for this. Especially in the uncertainties of the world and economy right now.
Same. I used to make videos and do some live TV as a teenager and loved it. My friends watch my old content and think it’s hilarious and authentic.
During college, I forced myself out of that creative, goofy side due to bullying and feeling like I needed to get a STEM degree to succeed. Been miserable a few years out of college.
Last night my friend called me after I had another wave of suicidal thoughts. He told me that he always enjoyed eating with me, and for whatever reason food always taste better when he sees me eating. Even the most boring food tasted so good when he watched me. I realized that other people have told me that too, bizarrely enough. He reminded me of the videos I used to make as a teenager. Told me to start doing mukbang videos and gave me a lot of other suggestions. For the first time in a long time, I didn’t feel lonely anymore. I didn’t feel depressed and when I think about making these videos, it put a smile to my face.
It made me realize that a lot of times, we deny ourselves of who we really are and what we really like. We become less authentic and destroy our own agency by living life to the rubric others set for us.
No career change. Oddly enough, realizing my love for creating videos has actually made me more motivated for working. Because I need a stable situation so I can continue making videos.
I think ultimately ill make a career change that favors flexibility and creativity more and has a large degree of talking to people and demos (related to tech, think ux design, product management or software architect). Focusing more on the aspects of my career I do enjoy and tailoring my career to suit my lifestyle rather than the other way around.
But I doubt I’ll go into the TV industry though. I got really turned off by it when I saw corporate backside of a big TV channel when I was a teenager. All the fake and manufactured sets. All the props of those reality shows, even the sets and props of wilderness survivor type shows are made in the basement of a New York corporate building.
Start a YouTube channel to build your portfolio.
Have you tried volunteering in the role you want to be? That might give you a feel for whether you'll like it
Side hustle until it’s real. You may find you don’t want to do your hobby as a job. It’s different when doing What you love for fun than doing something because you have to pay the bills
I feel this. Following
How old are you? If you have no dependents, I would 1) work just enough years so that if you took a couple years off, you wouldn’t have to reapply to entry level work. 2) Take 1-2 years off to pursue your video producer dream. 3) Reassess whether happier in corporate job or video producer job and either continue as video prod or return to corporate life. My friend had 7 YOE and quit for a year to travel the world. He moved back into his parents basement for ~3.5 months at the age of 32 when he got back until he found a new job but it all worked out for him.
Do what makes you happy. You might want to try marketing consulting before jumping off the ship.

Can you split the difference and get a job in the media industry as a production manager or content strategist? It isn't directly what you want but it will allow you to get closer to video production people, learn more about the field and move to a more creative culture without risking derailing your promising career.
I think M1 nailed it, content strategy for Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, etc... seems like an exit you could really crush at. Coming from McK it’s definitely doable and your passion for the space will come through in interviews
What’s your question?

If you want a safe way to try, look into doing a rotation or move to internal role with firm communications team. You might have less pay cut or culture shock. Search intranet for Global Media Services to find contacts or see on Next if there are any roles open.
There are several former video producers at the firm, too. You can search know profiles for key works about video production, filming to find them. Networking here might help you think through your idea.
Why not start a business on the side and then when you feel ready make the jump
Coach
Do it do it do it.
You really should work towards this. Sure the first job would be a pay cut but once you get good in a few years you’ll be back to what you were making. My fiancé is 41 and this is his dream. He’s also creative but from a developing country so this was not an option when young. He could have pursued this at 35 though and didn’t because of age and pay. 6 years later he still is unhappy w work and wants to pursue it but it’s even harder to do now he’s older. Don’t wait. You’re still young enough to do this and make it happen. My fiancé is working this as a side hussle but it’s always going to be hard for him to 100% make the transition at his age. Don’t be still hating your job and sad you didn’t take the risk in 10-20 years.
A career is long - you’ll probably work 40 more years. It’s worth the next 3-5 being tumultuous to get your feet on the ground in a career you like so that the next 30-35 will be much more enjoyable and rewarding.
No shame in changing fields or direction - the only shame is in wanting to try but being too fear-based and risk adverse to try

That’s a good perspective to look at it from, thanks :)
How hard have you been pursuing the video hobby on the side? That is a very freelance business, so you can start doing that in parallel without losing your income.
Coach
This is a freelance business though so if you’re really committed you start by building up a freelance portfolio on the side. Spend the next 2-3 years doing that, volunteering, trying to do small advertising videos for Etsy products or small Instagram or local businesses.
Listen to Gary Vee also. Very motivational and helpful for this kind of stuff. The deal is if this is ACTUALLY Youre dream and you want it enough, you’ll put in the effort to hussle on the side to build up to making it happen. Real jobs aren’t going to magically come your way. You’ll have to work up through volunteer, YouTube, freelance, small gigs and then eventually bigger ones or networking in once you have something to show for it.
This type of work you want to do is the type of thing everyone wants to do, which makes it almost impossible to get without the right connections. Try to apply to and get that job while at Mckinsey. If you can actually get an offer, then you can consider it. Right now you don’t have any offers, so I don’t really see what the conflict is.
Have you looked into McK’s video production arm? Could be a good way to start in an internal rotation.
If you stay here (as in outside of creative work), you will be miserable.
I'm the same way -- creatively inclined -- and am just not at the place where I can leave (things in life came up). For now, I've gotten into some classes or opportunities to grow my portfolio.
I've also noticed a few roles with some orgs that are looking for a creative who has biz/ops skills they can bring to the table. So some opportunities are out there.
I say craft a path that marries up with creative work.

Similar situation / feelings. Photography, DJing and music production is my passion but in a STEM role that I hate. I’m just using my current role as a means to an end. Side hustle now to keep learning and will leave this consulting life in 2 years. Set goals, plan and go for it! (35 years old guy here)

What about digital consulting?
60% paycut of what? If its 100k, 40 k is plenty to live with modern comforts (even in nyc with roomate) and be happy doing what you love
Yeah, I’d say 60-80k is minimum for “modern comforts” with roommates.
Sounds like your young, do it. Trust me only gets harder and harder to change as you get older. Eventually you’ll increase your salary in our chosen line of work.
