25%. Although if you're splitting, you should go less

That sounds a bit high to me, though I guess it depends on neighborhood/amenities desired. Friends I know are paying 3.5k for older two beds in Midtown or 3.6k for an upgraded one bed, doorman, gym in Fidi

After a bit of life (mid 50) I'd say keep in 20-33% range. Go as low in that range as you can and still be comfortable and can avoid hideous commutes if you rent. Go as high as you can if you buy and find a place surrounded by a number of houses nicer than yours. Stay more toward the middle otherwise...note the above may not cover taxes, insurance, utilities ...

like

Depends on where you plan to get. For a decent 1 bed room it will be anywhere from 3.4k to 5k

like

25-30% of gross MAX. If you can find cheaper go for it.

like

^ Should be more like 4K per month if they are maxing out on 401k (which would be wise)

like

BCG1 - so max of $2k each ?

I thought the general rule of thumb was 25% of gross income

How much is 96k really after taxes in NYC?

I would stick to the 3.5-4 range

In ny it's not uncommon for ppl to spend 40-50% of income on rent

How much is 96k in take home pay in NYC

Probably 5k per month after taxes

It's probably closer to $5k a month even with the max 401k

You're probably right. I was using 38% combined federal and state rate for NY and taking $18k pretax for 401k

Don't forget city taxes :)

So 5k ok interesting
