Because most people in advertising have never experienced real hardship, so they LARP it for cred.
Late stage post modernism.
You ain't nothing without a group identity. Being part of a 'victimised' group allows you to act agressive without repercussions. So naturally everyone wants to be a victim now because it's the perfect excuse to act like a shitty human.
It seems everybody in this thread glosses over the terrible work life balance, the high number of cynics/general unpleasantly, and the high burnout rate. Yes, we did indeed make it - but recognize that many people have fair right to be unhappy or disgruntled.
Not everybody needs validation or an excuse to be angry or who knows what else. Recognize perspectives, otherwise you're no better. Good on you for genuinely asking, OP.
I had more than a few shitty jobs before working in advertising, so when I hear recent college grads complain about their jobs, I say to myself, "Oh, you don't even know."
Best post on fishbowl. We're all lucky weirdo brats.
I think it’s because our industry is “problems based”. So feeling like you have something negative to overcome is second nature. Also it’s a very emotional business! At least the creative side of things. Emotions and a business environment make for a lot of negative energy. But I get what you’re saying and you’re right. We’ve made it and we should remember to appreciate the spoils more than most of us do
I guess it really depends what you’re working on and if you feel happy with the output of your job. Here’s a possible explanation for the negativity of some creatives (myself included, at times):
A lot of us got into this field out of passion, and we deal with insane hours and subpar pay because of the potential to do something creatively fulfilling. So if you’re on a bad account or not feeling like good work is being made, you don’t feel like the sacrifices are worth it. And if the hours are crazy, you’re too drained to work on passion projects outside of the office.
Advertising is a pretty liberal industry which tends to attract soft natured people with general victim mentalities. There’s always someone to blame or complain about. I feel the same way as you, I constantly look around smiling, grateful I have a job doing something creative in a cool environment
@CW1 & 2 let’s add the casual racism and inaction by HR that makes you further question the sacrifices you make to the mix
To be honest I miss the gratification of interpersonal interaction you get from a “regular” job. At least when I was waiting tables at Olive Garden I knew that I’d made a few people’s days brighter and helped them have a memory or a smile. Working overtime writing banners feels Sisyphean by comparison.
This job beats working, any day.
Amen
Lol the first person saying "our industry is problems based." Talk about someone who's never met another human.
This pretty much sums up my feelings on the matter:

There are lots of people that shouldn’t be working in advertising that are working in advertising.
That’s where the bitterness comes from, in my opinion.
100%
YES
Because after a while, when some folks realize their jobs are for the most part bothering people, many want to do something else with more creative freedom and can’t/won’t/don’t because they’re used to the $$$. Hence, bitching.
