When we’re paid to worry, it becomes a hobby.

But definitely an insidious hobby.

most associates don't actively want to make partner or care that much about the health of their firm. constant anxiety and chaos? i would guess 75% of associates live without it, especially because there are a lot fewer senior associates than jr associates. partners? probably only like 25% or less

I did before big law. Left big law to escape this

Why do people put up with the anxiety and worry? Serious question. Is it comfortable to live like that, or does it somehow get easier? Do people forget what having zero anxiety/stress feels like? It absolutely drove me insane during biglaw and I made moves to leave very, very quickly.

I’m very sorry to hear that. Have you considered therapy? (Genuinely asking and not trolling—I’ve had so much success with therapy in recent months.)

Honestly, everyone left at my firm (who hasn’t quit) is probably at least a little bit of a psychopath so I would guess it’s relatively higher than I would expect. Probably like 22%

The solution I internalized: if every deadline is stressful, but always works out somehow and gets to the finish time after time (by luck or ridiculous effort, as needed), there’s really no need to stress at all. The stress can then exist on a scheduling level, but not reach you at a deeper personal level. In other words, internalize that it’s all going to be ok, just like it has been every other time (accepting that may include working some long nights). Maybe that will help someone out there.
