Give them their packages now. Give the remote a few weeks. It is the dead of winter, you don’t need it now. If you don’t get the remote, you can probably buy a new remote for $30. You can buy a new fan for $150. Buy one install it and move on with more productive areas of your life.

The cost of replacing the fan or the remote seems far less expensive than the emotional effort it seems your spending on dealing with the seller and their agent and posting to online forums. Also in the grand scheme of “gotchyas” that can pop up after closing and move-in, if this is your only beef, consider it a blessing. Forrest for the trees my friend.

“We have the packages. Let’s arrange a meet up where we can exchange them for the remote”. Not quite holding them hostage. Not quite Not holding them hostage either

Speaking from personal experience - sellers agents are generally a**holes towards buyers. The seller is probably a very nice person (or not). We had a similar issue (garage opener) and we bypassed the agent altogether. Once the sale is done, nothing wrong with contacting them directly if you can. They will likely be a LOT more cooperative. Even if they aren’t nice people, it’s difficult being an ass when you aren’t hiding behind an agent.

I'm guessing this isn't helpful now, but if you already knew they were being a jerk about the remote, I would have stopped communicating, bought a replacement remote, and left the packages outside. You are not obligated to care for the seller's stuff after you legally own the property, and in most states you can charge rent for storing their crap if you do.

likesmart

I've been there, I bought a house over the summer from a seller who lives in another state and had never actually moved in. It wasn't a great experience - they had multiple non owners who has copies of keys (we got all locks changed immediately upon taking be possession, but weren't happy to hear that random non-parties, including neighbors only a couple houses away, could be in the house doing whatever they wanted during the closing process) and they had to mail us one of the garage door openers after closing. Most of the hassle ended fairly shortly after closing, though the HOA messed up and sent the seller a letter meant for us approving changes to the home, so we were delayed in doing things for about 45 days after closing for no real reason.

Give them their packages.

You can buy a replacement remote and receiver for 20 bucks if nothing else works.

like

Exactly. We had same issue. 20 bucks on Amazon took care of it. 6 months later the seller found the remote and mailed it to us with a nice note.

like

A few weeks back, we reached out to the seller’s agent about this issue and we got a response saying the seller there is no remote and was very curt. Now the seller says there is a remote and was mistakenly packed away and that they haven’t unpacked yet. We are unable to use the living room fan without the remote and replacing the unit is going to be on me. How do I approach this? Seller wants to send someone over to pick up her packages (license tags).

likefunny

Get a new remote and ask the seller and agent to use the unpacked remote as a Nokia phone. It might also remind them to keep remote with the products not pack everything they get their hands on. I will be embarrassed telling court i am fighting for a remote but yeah these says people get hot headed so soon!

So this is real pain, but you can disable the remote control center inside the fan and directly attach the wiring to the switch wire that’s in the wall. Just look up the instructions online for the make and model of the fan. Usually the remote powered fans have the serial number just inside the fan. What sucks is that you’d have to remove the entire fan, mess with wiring, and you wouldn’t be able to power it with a remote and only a wall switch.

MD1, I totally agree lol. I just merely stated it’s possible lol

Here’s a thought - treat them nicely, even if they don’t back. What goes around, comes around. I had a few minor problems with the house we bought 5 years ago (<$500 fixes) and was quite obsessed at the time. Seller wouldn’t budge, even forgot a expensive Dyson in the house and came to pick it up weeks later. Turns out after 5 years of home ownership and thousands down, wasn’t even remotely (🤯) worth the trouble.

Do the sellers still live in the area? Are they wanting you to send the packages? Have they since changed their mailing address or is this going to keep happenjng

No, looks like they moved to a different state. They plan to send someone to pick the packages up.

Had a previous own take the mailbox key and 2nd garage door remote. When I asked they claimed they didn't have those and everything they had was given to me... 2 weeks later I had my mailbox lock replaced so I can access it. All of a sudden the previous owner knocks on my door saying they found the 2nd garage key and asked if I received any of their mails....unfortunately some home sellers seem to take things on purpose.

My seller didn’t have keys to any doors in the house. You read that right. The front door has a smart code. I had to replace all the locks on all the other doors. It was a so sad, too bad response. Don’t worry about the fan. You just spent a lot of money, $150 is nothing.
